Wish we had a PM function. Got this message.

I wasn't aware who ran the site, just strikes me as very very strange that pretty much every other forum I'm a member of has the PM function but this one doesn't. Its even more strange when seemingly many members would like it but the webmaster says no. Could at least create an opt in/opt out option for PMs.

Why doesn't the webmaster want to enable PMs?

My guess is it might have something to do with this also being a dating site with personals that create a revenue stream....

    Exactly Tam.

There is more than enough opportunity to contact someone via their contact info they provide. I would think that it was more convenient to contact them outside of this forum due to the technology (Skype, Google hangouts, yahoo, tango, good ole fashion call, etc) available. Why add on more work on to the shoulders of Webbie for the free portion of the site? Moreover, you would be inviting a host of harassment through a PM function. We already get enough trolls as it is, there would definitely be an uptick in trolling, stalking and harassment. Who's going to police that, or field all those personal issues. You can't say that everyone is going to keep their PM issues private.

I don't remember the exact reason why Webbie disabled the PM function, but it had something to do with members (females, I believe) being severely harassed through PMs.

Plus with the amount of trolls this site attracts, it's just another way of causing mayhem.

If you want to be contacted, I would suggest putting an email address or IM screenname on your profile. That way, you can be contacted by interested parties.

If you're worried about your email address getting into the wrong hands, just do what I did, make a new email address. And with email systems, you can always have any emails forwarded to your good email account (without them knowing), so you never even have to log into the "fake" email.

Any site that has a PM feature also has an ignore feature ALSO the feature to not accept PM at all. I go to this board but also one of the top 20 most active boards on the net so I know it's possible lol.

It'd be nice because it's hard to message people frequently. I used to talk to curleyblonde a lot but we lost touch. Plus we are in different time zones.

Also I've moderated other boards before and if someone is harassing members, we'll that's what mods are for.

I understand if it's a monetary thing but don't act like it's a hassle to have a PM feature or it will invite harassment or something lol. That's why we have moderation here.

I understand your frustration, and like I said, Webbie has his reasons for disabling that feature. I will report your post to ask him to come here and explain why there isn't any PM feature on here.

As for mods, we have very limited power, so we wouldn't be able to "discipline" anyone abusing the power of the PM. That all lies with Webbie.

If the mod's had to field complaints about pm (and there would be a lot of them), I wouldn't do it. That would definitely take away some the enjoyment I get from the forum. Even if you had an ignore feature (as we do for the forum), just having to deal with the initial situation can be off putting. I'm sure you've had an encounter here that escalated. Maybe I might try it see how it went (benefit of the doubt), but as soon as it started to go south imo, I wouldn't be on duty.

*Admittedly, the few mod duties that we are charged with, I haven't been keeping up with in a while. I was just thinking the other day that I should relinquish them so that someone else may do a better job.

    This 100%

Does anyone actually pay to use other parts of this site and does anyone use this as a dating site?

just put your info on your profile if you welcome someone contacting you...if someone you don't want to contact you starts stalking you then that is going to be your problem...

you could just rep the person you want to reach out to and leave your info...if they contact you then mission accomplished:smt023

webbie doesn't have time to babysit all the bad behavior...and there will be bad behavior...he can barely keep up with the threads

Maybe the webbie can get an option for email addresses to be displayed in the contact details area. Just seems like the only options are for instant messaging services like Skype, ICQ and yahoo etc.

I'm not all too sure about that. If that were the case then she wouldn't have mentioned not being acknowledged about her compliments. Otherwise, why bother? If she wanted to be recognized then she should have left her name.

My guess is that it may be someone who forgot that when you rep someone it doesn't automatically include your name. I know that I've forgotten to sign my name to a rep more than once, especially when I first joined the board.

I sometimes wish there were a way you could know who each rep received is from. There have been a few questionable reps that made me a little curious and I have to wonder why some people say some of the things they do. If you are bold enough to leave random, anonymous comment that is either borderline disrespectful or vulgar, why not make yourself known? Get big and say what you gotta say and own it!

It's not a big deal. I just wanted to apologize really.

I rep people with comments and forget that this board doesn't show who commented.

I agree. I wish I knew who repped me from time to time. Not as a 'follow up'. Just curious than anything.

PM's used to be on a long time ago but it got to be too much of a problem with troublemakers (racists and others) coming on to the site and attacking or harassing members. From folks who did not really care if their account was banned after the deed.

I suppose there will always be people who ruin things for others. It is a real shame though.

Perhaps you could require a certain rep level before someone could PM. It would be a nice feature. Some of us don't get the chance to rep much and the need to spread it around can be difficult.
