Macy's security guards worked on a quota system of five “arrests” per week — and nonwhite shoppers were identified by an internal “race code system,” according to a lawsuit.

African-American men were referred to as “10-90s” and black women as “10-91s” among store security personnel, a Turkish immigrant charged in court papers after her 2010 arrest. The demeaning code was created by Macy’s “to facilitate its targeting of Middle Eastern, African-American/black and other nonwhite shoppers,” the suit charged.

Plaintiff Ayla Gursoy, who is Muslim, said she was detained and arrested while shopping in the Herald Square store on Sept. 18, 2010. Charges were later dismissed.

In a partial deposition provided by her attorney, store detective Brenda Howard acknowledged five “arrests” per week was the target for security workers, according to the suit. Howard couldn’t be reached Tuesday. The attorney did not provide the full deposition.

WTF?? First of all I am not going to steal shit. Secondly either the real COPS will be there to take me to jail for something I did not do so I can post bail, or the mall guards can call the COPS while I walk away. I am not going to let anyone "detain" me. They done lost their fucking minds.

Macy's must've hired an Uncle Ruckus to head up their security team. I can almost imagine someone in security control announcing on the radios squawking out shit like,"CODE: BLACK! CODE: BLACK!"

You can't be detaining people for theft when they haven't stolen anything, or assume they committed a crime because they PAID FOR AN ITEM you don't think they can afford.

Just because some minorities steal, it's wrong to assume EVERY minority is a potential thief.

Best believe at that MACY'S department store, there are White people stealing those suckers blind.

When I was a kid there was a 7-11 blocks from where I lived, and there was this asshole cashier who would watch me like a hawk as soon as I entered the store. He'd be watching me when he was ringing up other customers.

I had two White friends who noticed this one time when we were playing video games, and the next day after school when we went to 7-11, while I was walking around innocently in that convenience store, these dudes helped themselves to the 'free' burritos and Hershey bars and M&Ms.:smt119

Being an effective store security officer is about recognizing patterns of behavior, not skin color.

How is what I said a personal attack Oh Great Superior One? It's a truthful observation. You are a negro aren't you? And you are always pushing nothing but Neo Confederate views & rhetoric aren't you?

And as far as the issue at hand Great Black Man God, who stole anything? Everyone mentioned in the topic at hand were all detained after they lawfully purchased items from the establishments. I realize operating with 17th/18th century logic & opinions like you do is hard in the 21st century and all but damn......:smt017

From what I understand they weren't stealing, they were just shopping like everybody else. Unless there is some part of this story i'm missing this case seems to be about as blatant as it gets.

And the problem with having a quota system of a certain amount of arrests is that if the quota isn't being met (possibly because of fewer people stealing during that period) it encourages the guards to trump up phony charges on someone to make the cut.

macys is not a high end luxury store...it's owed by federated...same as bloomingdales...moderate price points

theft is on the rise in the usa...people don't steal just for themselves anymore...they steal so that they can turn around and sell it for cash

suspicious behavior is what loss prevention is looking for and like it or not some people act a fool in stores bringing the attention to themselves

So based on this particular story who was acting with suspicious behavior or acting the fool?

unless you have ever worked in a retail environment you would not understand how it happens...tell you what...you produce a video tape of the incident and I will identify the behavior and show you...

I worked retail in hs at a music store and our shrinkage problem was mostly due to middle age white men who would steal shit on low traffic days because everyone figured they were "safe"
Also your statement implies that there was a reason to assume there was suspicious behavior to justify the bs profiling. Or are you on the Paniro bandwagon where blacks have to suffer for the actions of others regardless of personal behavior?

    1. Macy's is high end

    2. Being a minority doesn't warrant being arrested, nor does it mean a person is 'suspicious'. The charges were dropped against all the patrons that were detained that says a lot.

apparently you don't know what high-end luxury means so let me educate you numbers...the following stores and brands would be considered high end:

    saks
    neimans
    Bergdorf goodman
    barneys
some sections of Nordstrom (but not the entire store)
    chanel
    prada
    LV
    hermes

macys is a moderate price point store...period!

plenty of white people get stopped in stores as well and are also detained, followed, chased out of a store...they also present suspicious behavior...it just doesn't make the news
