How do you not know where the line is?
Of course it is offensive.

 

For me it is offensive, but clearly by the expression on the young mans face he doesn't have a problem with it, so the line isn't quite that clear.

 

It is hard for me to tell. Just because he is laughing doesn't mean he is not offended. he may also be backwards in that terminology like folks who try to use it as a term of endearment or think it is not offensive when used with an A. He may think it is acceptable if she is dating him. as if dating him means she isn't racially insensitive and can wear that shirt.

 

I don't think there's always a universal line in the sand. People are offended at different levels. Almost every bm I know has used that word at one point or another in my presence...but you'll never catch me in a shirt like that. It's tasteless and not cute IMO. What people find offensive is completely subjective in most cases.

 

Fuck this shirt and all the distractions like it. We have much bigger fish to fry and two young idiots acting like young idiots is far from one of them.

It doesn't offend me but the fact that the line is unclear, it could affect others. If she was my girl, id just say babe, its cute/funny to me but others in public might take offense so just don't wear it.

Not that I'm PC on any level but it's both offensive & disrespectful IMO simply because she was ignorant enough to be wearing a shirt like that in public. Personally wouldn't be dating or married to any woman, Black, White or other who would wear any shirt with any variation of the "N" word on it out in public.

 

Lighten up she's a teenage girl not 30. I'm sure it wasn't intended to offend or make fun of anyone.

 

If you're not offended by it fine, but who are you or anyone else to dictate to others what they should or should not be offended by? Again if she or anyone else had any common sense & respect for others, especially for Black people, don't wear shit like that in public. Behind closed doors or around her boyfriend & friends that know her very well, then whatever.

 

While he pretends that one word is more socally acceptable than the other and supposedly has a different meaning (because of the "context" of the other word), I bet if I passed him on the street, and in a friendly way said "Hey, my n***a!" I would have a few choice words ringing in my ears as I walked away....

Most of us (and I think even you, when you get right down to it) believe that the N words have little difference in meaning. It's who says it and how it's said. But if either word is found to be generally offensive, then it shouldn't be spoken by black or white people. But it's the typical "I can punch my little brother, but you better not" scenario.

As we discussed previously, I'm offended by the word cunt. I'm surely not going to call someone else one, jokingly or not. (And please save the context bs. I get it. But your word isn't allowed to trump others simply because you think it has a justifiably negative history/context. So did another word recently debated, but you disagreed.)
