Huh??!??!? That name is a lot of things, but it ain't sodomy. Maybe 'bastardized'? Lol A person not being able to spell French nobility isn't the point. It's about people stripped of culture having no sense of historical continuity and thus no sense of meaning and value that other groups attribute to names and naming. As a result they arbitrarily pick things, regardless of whether they have a clue what they are or where they come from. And I have to stand firm on my position that Marquis (mispronounced as 'Mar-keese' is a mispronunciation of the French term) that someone saw somewhere and thought it sounded 'cold'. Ex: I have heard it pronounced correctly and incorrectly when referring to Brother Marquis of the 2 Live Crew. I would buy the Marcus derivative argument on a Marcusia or Marcusina, but not Marquis. Also those 'ise' endings aren't feminine at all, they're French unisex and male endings. That's how they got introduced into the English language. Like Dominique is their Dominic, not a woman's name. Patrice is their Patrick. And so on. The people butchering these names don't have to have heard of the French origin to select it, that's just proving my point. They are grasping onto things the meaning of which they haven't a clue, because they heard it and it sounded nice. I think it's in the same vein as all the Duke, King, Queen, Princess, Prince, Count, Countess, Baron and who knows what else that I have run across in my lifetime. Since the ending of slavery, black naming trends have often been shaped by a need to express freedom, pride, honor, morality and righteousness (hence all the Old Testament names) in a process that is continually being redefined. That's what people stripped of a culture do - they make one up. Kwanza, anyone? I was thinking about what you wrote yesterday and probably the first example I have ever run across of the overt feminizing trend is evident in the name of the guy on Sons of Anarchy who is the Lieutenant's assistant. His real name is Lamonica Garrett. But upon closer investigation I found out he is named after Daryle LaMonica, the former Oakland Raiders player. That's ironic, because LaMonica is an Italian surname, not a first name. Another case of "make it up as you go along".
I don't understand how this name thing is due to people being stripped of a culture. How many white people name their kids according to a cultural thing? I honestly don't understand. Based on the last names of the last couple generations of my family, We are of German heritage. My mom liked the name of a former senator's daughter and she gave me the same name. Which is Irish, btw. Had nothing to do with my heritage or culture.
You don't see white guys(or anybody else) with feminized male names like Dontrelle and LaMicheal. NOBODY else does that. Women in male dominant societies don't do that...it would never occur to them to do so. Major is masculne Majorette is feminine Cigar is masculine Cigarette is feminine Seems like we're the only ones that didn't get the memo.
Ok, when you tie it to being a matriarchal society, I get it, but Ore was saying it was due to being stripped of a culture, and I didn't understand that reference. Why do you say that the black community is a matriarchal society? Can you explain that more? I asked that several pages ago, but no one addressed it. What are the significant differences (besides the name thing) between a patriarchal/matriarchal society?
To make a long story short during slavery it was very common to split families, the great migration north and to the west and the building of the projects Uncle Sam practically barred the men from living there legally
Native Americans on reservations...stripped of thier culture and hooked on meth don't give their sons girl-sounding names. I say the Black community is matriarchal for the same reason I say the white community is patriarchal IT'S THE TRUTH Whites leave their inheritance and businesses to their sons. Black people leave their inheritance and businesses to their daughters. That is matriarchy We are the only race with more boys up for adoption than girls. That is matriarchy Women are the victims of sexism and chauvenism in a male dominant society. Men are the victims of sexist and chauvenism in a female dominant society. You can talk as bad as you want about BM in our community...even on this forum...but you better not say shit about a BW. BM are slammed for dating WW... BW are never slammed for dating WM even if he's a neo-nazi or a southern segregationist.
I could write a full essay about all the aspects of thoughts projecting from this photo......I happen to belong to that distinct percentage of black men who love white women,..... But fortunate for the so many good intentioned black women, it is only a distinct percentage..........
Some men are given feminine names like Lynn, Hillary, Tracy, Stacy or Vivian. lt all depends on the parents. Or parent. Johnny Cash's song A Boy Named Sue was based on a true story about a boy who was named Sue. Sue grew up and became a judge.
A dude named Hillary??? Damn. His parents better start his boxing lessons while he's a toddler. School bullies will have a field day with that one.
I'm not talking about names like that. Shirley used to be a man's name. Maury Povich's dad is named Shirley. There is a male boxer named Vivian Harris. I'm talking about male names like Shawn turned into LaShawn or Shawntrelle or Micheal turned into LaMicheal.
NOBODY else does that. I have noticed bi-racials don't get stupid names like that. you'll never see a half-breed named Jandavion..
I remember when I was a kid, I did not like my name (my name is Gary). I did not think it had any meaning to me. It was uncool. A name like Steve, Rob, Jim or Joe had power. These were masculine sounding names. I wanted to be called other names. But, my parents called me Gary and that ended the argument. I was glad I was not named anything exotic or even biblical. I met an employee at Best Buy who was named Imhotep(The Mummy's Imhotep).
I don't mean for my posts to be taken categorically. I do not mean to say that every single person naming their child does it out of historical or cultural obligation, but historically speaking names were given based on some sense of historical continuity and shared culture. Nowadays almost anything goes, from random assortments of consonants to combinations of both parents' names to regular names with interesting placement of apostrophes. Black Americans were among the first to have names that weren't embedded within a larger cultural context because we were the first (and probably only) people completely stripped of any sense of historical continuity. Black people have been having "interesting" made-up names for over a hundred years. And I have also noticed white southerners with made up names as well, and I am willing to bet that their fluid approach to this is at least partially influenced by their familiarity with black American culture. That and the creative post-60s use of nature motifs (Amber, Heather, Meadow, Luna, etc) But I still think that for the most part, you won't find many Irish Shaniquas or Italian Hildegardes. Hooked on meth? Perhaps. Overwhelming alcoholic and plagued by the same poor health conditions that the black community faces? Absolutely. Stripped of their culture? Not a chance. They all know who and what they are. They know their nation, their ancestors and what their language is (or used to be, depending on the individual). They have a set of spiritual beliefs and a historical tie to a specific area of land. That sense of self was obliterated from black people by brutality. Are they battered and beaten? Without a doubt. And their names are almost always either generic Christian names that were forced on their people a 100-130 years ago by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and government policy, or English translations of what their ethnic names would have been. And those names meant something.
I've never heard anyone named these effeminate names. But all this nonsense about matriarchal is ridiculous.Have you ever been to African countries? Its patriarchal and the same can be said for the US.The reasons for the anger from some BW of WW/BM relationships can be discussed but that would be a lengthy discussion. Its not BW that frame the media and discussions in this country. Its white males that primarily set these racist rules. Who cares if someone or a BW criticizes you for your choice?Remember who started one drop rules and destroyed entire neighborhoods when a WW lied about a BM raping her. Most black people seem to be obsessed with fighting each other over past psychological manipulation. When blacks stop fighting each other over nationality, who is black enough, etc then everyone can take back their communities, culture, message, etc instead of buying into the eurocentric view. Its ridiculous that some of you came on here and talked about BW are most to blame for the issues facing blacks. Did they write the laws, control the media, etc?Like I wrote before this is the typical infighting that gets the black community nowhere.
Hooked on meth...........YES............I don't even know why you're trying to deny it. Their "spiritual beliefs" didn't stop them from enslaving Africans and capturing them for whites. The cherokkkee didn't free a single slave during their "trail of tears" Ya'll have romanticized those indians beyond recognition.
Dude stop lying about not seeing any of those names. If you've watched a football game you seen those hoe-style names. If Black people are patriarchal explain why we have more boys up for adoption than girls. ALL male dominant groups have more girls up for adoption than boys. ALL male dominate groups leave their inheritance and businesses to their SONS....Black people don't do that. WE ARE A MATRIARCHY We invest more in our daughters than our sons.I don't see how any sane person can deny it.
Most of the people I've known have pretty normal names. You're ignoring a lot of things that happened to make things this way. Here is the main problem. Black males have been disproportionately put in jail and locked out of a lot of positions. So women have had to be the head of the household. Its almost across the board of all races that women in US are going to college at higher rates than men. Its also across the board when it comes to more boys being up for adoption than girls. More couples in US request girls even when adopting internationally. I think this is because women have been able to gain more power but it still doesn't make it a matriarchy.Since men do dominate most positions of power, wealth, etc.
