Damm, man killed for commenting on Facebook picture

Getting on Facebook may have cost an Oklahoma City man his life.

Police reported the man was fatally shot after making a comment on Facebook about a young woman's swimsuit.

“This is a perfect example of some of the ridiculous reasons people kill for,” Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater said.

Five days later, a gunman killed Tyree inside his apartment. The gunman also wounded Tyree's visiting friend, Michael Joe Hale. The victims were not robbed of any jewelry or money, police say.

Martin is charged with first-degree murder and shooting with intent to kill. He remains in Oklahoma County jail. His attorney, assistant public defender Jacob Keyes, declined to comment.

Close enough connection

Homicide detectives think there is a close enough connection between the killing and the comment that they took legal steps in August to preserve the woman's and homicide victim's Facebook pages as evidence.

“During an interview … Martin acknowledged having words with the deceased victim about his comments made about the bathing suit photo,” Oklahoma City police detective Ryan Porter wrote in a court affidavit.

The woman was identified in the court affidavit as Sharda Perkins. She posted the photo in June, writing, “Me on my way swimin.” (Below)





Using an obscenity, Martin angrily asked online what Tyree meant by his “damm” comment, Perkins' Facebook page shows.

Tyree had befriended some of the young women in his apartment complex and would buy them things, witnesses told police.

In an unusual twist in the investigation, attack survivor Hale positively identified Martin as the shooter through Facebook, police reported.

Hale told The Oklahoman he looked at Tyree's Facebook page at the hospital, saw that Perkins was one of Tyree's only online friends and then looked at her Facebook page.

There, Hale saw photos of her boyfriend, Martin.

“It was pure dumb luck that he had his picture on her Facebook page,” Hale said.

The survivor said he knew about the woman because Tyree once showed him her photo on a cellphone.

“He had mentioned to me a couple of weeks prior that they had been together. They both agreed it was a mistake … but everything's cool. They were still friends and left it at that. That's what he told me,” Hale said.

Hale said the shooter did not say anything to Tyree before pulling the trigger.

“James told the guy twice, ‘I know you,'” Hale also said.

Hale, 48, a disabled Iraq War veteran, believes the shooter had one or two accomplices. Hale recalled one guy said to the shooter, “What's taking so long? Hurry up and pop a cap in his ass.”

Detectives still are investigating the shooting in an effort to identify the other suspects.

Perkins, 21, could not be located for comment. Calls to a phone number listed for her went unanswered.

In July on her Facebook page, she wrote Martin was facing serious charges for something he didn't do. She also wrote she knew he was going to get out and that they would be back together soon.

That's the real reason for the killing. Not the "damm" comment. The old guy fucked his girl. Typical love triangle.

How these guys invest their emotions in these hos is beyond me. Dumbest reason in the world to be facing a charge for first-degree murder.

Killing somebody over a comment? Even if an affair was taken into question, why would you act on such an impulse?

This is why I won't do FaceBook. Too much drama can be fatal.

 

I think it's all about the people you choose to "friend' on Facebook. I don't have drama on my page. A few "gun rights" people, one of whom I finally just had to hide on my feed because he was CONSTANTLY posting stuff which got annoying. But most of my contacts are reasonable, positive, fun people. I enjoy my FB page.
