I'm headed to Switzerland to study at university over there and it would be one major understatement to say I'm excited.

Of course as an 18 year old, born and bred in South Africa, it's going to be really interesting/challenging to be a 'minority'. It's well documented over here about how little (basically nothing) everyone knows about Africa, I could go on forever about how humourously ignorant you guys are, but this SOUTH AFRICAN :))) comedian (who was recently on the Jay Leno show) sums it up kinda well!

and i'll just throw another one in for good measure:

Anywhoo, I'm ready to make waves over there and represent my country and culture, change perceptions and I'll update you guys on my experiences (especially those regarding the fairer sex)

and If anyone has any tips on life in Switzerland, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks!!

There is one member of this site who knows a lot about Switzerland so I hope you can get info from that person. I hope to learn more about going to Switzerland so I can avoid the Oprah Winfrey experience.

Haha, I read about that Oprah Winfrey thing! I'm impressed with the way she handled it.. The sad thing is I don't think there's a way to avoid it, there will always be people like that and there will be times you will encounter them.

If I ever do encounter them I will call them out. If it can happen to the most powerful Black woman in the US it can happen to any Black person.

I had met a man from Switzerland years ago. He was a friendly guy and like all visitors to this country he was curious about our customs and culture. I guess, if you pardon the cliche, if there is one like him, there are more like him.

Considering that there are three cultures on that country(Germanic,French and Italian), I would consider a start in Geneva or Berne and go from there. Also, try Lucerne and Kantor(if you want to see what Kantor looks like see the film Creepers with Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Bauchau. It is quite scenic.

That depends on your personal interest..the Country with its different influences (german, italian and french) gives you a lot of possibilities. Lugano, Geneve, Valais with its Castles or St. Moritz, Saas Fee, Gstaad with huge mountains or City life in Zürich,Luzern or Bern..look at this Website

My hostel in Zurich resides in a street when during Saturday nights where most of the clubs and businesses are open as late as 2am. It is like a little New York. That is quite a culture shock.
