The search is over: Dakota Johnson (Ben and Kate, The Social Network) will play Anastasia Steele and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) will take over the high-profile role of Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Author E.L. James tweeted the news this morning. The movie will be released on Aug. 1, 2014.

No clear candidates for the high-profile roles had emerged since Focus Features and Universal paid $5 million in March 2012 for movie rights to the best-selling trilogy — but there were lots of rumors. Earlier this year, Emma Watson’s name hit the mill for Anastasia, which prompted the Harry Potter star to tweet “who here actually thinks I would do 50 Shades of Grey as a movie? Like really. For real. In real life.”

Armie Hammer also had to fend off speculation earlier this year that he was going to play the handsome lead in what he described as a “mommy porn” flick. “No one actually offered me the movie, but while I was working on Lone Ranger my agent brought it up, and I said ‘Nope,’” Hammer told Playboy. “I mean, come on — it’s just mommy porn. I’m not going to sit on top of the laundry machine in spin cycle reading about putting a ball gag in someone’s mouth. That doesn’t do it for me.”

Johnson gained some critical attention for her role in the Fox comedy Ben and Kate last season but the single-camera confection about a single mom who lives with her brother (Nat Faxon) was cancelled because of low ratings. After her small, scantily-clad part in The Social Network (she went to bed with Sean Parker, aka Justin Timberlake), she went on to appear in The Five Year Engagement and 21 Jump Street. She is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

For the last six years, Hunnam has starred as Jax Teller in FX’s hit drama Sons of Anarchy. Earlier this year, he was the lead in the movie Pacific Rim.
Script for the 50 Shades adaptation is from Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova).

    PERSONAL NOTE:

I don't know how many of you read the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy by
EL James? I actually did, simply because I wanted to know what the
    fuss was all about.

For many months I resisted purchasing the books, because I had tried
several years ago to read books from the erotic genre. Specifically Anne
Rice's Claiming of Sleeping Beauty trilogy. At the time I was on a little
Anne Rice book binge. The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned was my
favorite, and I liked Memnoch the Devil. Those two books would make
    great movies by-the-way.

Anyways, I just could not do it! Reading female oriented erotica
(mommy porn) is weird! I am aware this genre has a large market, and
boasts massive amounts of book sales, but it's a tough read for a straight
guy. On the other side of the coin, explicit porn mags and videos is probably
hard for a straight gal to digest too.

Pornography is undoubtably the domain of men.

They are going to have a tough time filming this, with the high amounts of
"kinky fuckery" that goes on, but I'd like to see them try. Just don't ruin
it because I really did enjoy the books, despite having to digest Ana's view
of Christian Grey. (That Christian smell, the way his jeans fit blah blah blah)

Did anyone else read it, or is looking forward to the movie?

Okay, at the risk of sounding ill-informed, I have to admit that I've only heard this title mentioned as a popular book and am only vaguely aware that it's got quite a few women (and some men) talking about it. What's the big deal?

I finally broke down and read book one just to have a solid reason to hate it.
There is no "kinky fuckery" that goes on in this book. Dunno about book 2 and 3 and I refuse on principle.
If we are going based on the contract and the Dominants hard limits alone I'd be willing to bet there is no "kinky" anything in those books either.

    Memnoch the Devil- excellent book.
Beauty trilogy- really well written kink erotica.

5 million for the shades trilogy? Peanuts.

I wonder the same thing. I've never read it, I have no interest in the movie and I'm honestly not clear why this book is such a big deal? The few people I know who've read it said it was no good.

I am on the fence about the story, a bit more like Ali. I liked the storyline more than the kinky erotica and "fuckery". I felt like their fuckery should have been WAY more hard core and nasty, just based on what everyone was saying (the hype). Maybe I'm just much freakier?

I am about halfway thru book #2, but put it down for some time because I lost that sparked interest. I'll pick it up again before the movies come out. I'm guessing more than one since its a trilogy.

I was more interested in the cast, and hope they do a good job bringing the storyline to life.

Melanie Griffith is a proud mom after learning her daughter Dakota Johnson has landed the lead in the movie adaptation of E L James' sexy novel "Fifty Shades of Grey."

James herself announced the casting on Monday, revealing that Charlie Hunnam would be playing Christian Grey opposite Johnson's Anastasia Steele, and Griffith jumped on Twitter to celebrate.

She wrote, "My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades. Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama."

Meanwhile, producer Michael De Luca has revealed the pairing of Hunnam and Johnson was easy to pick as there was "incredible chemistry" between them.

    He says, "Auditions were stunning."

The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' movie will open next summer.

Good for the fans. Like men, women need a sexual outlet and bodice rippers are a popular way for them to be enticed, tantalized or whatever. I was pulling for Bill Murray to get the Grey role, oh well.

I'd go with you. But only if they cast that weaver woman as Ana Steele.

The powers that be need to make this shit happen. I probably still won't be bothered to read the books but that casting combination would be a done deal.

I read all 3 books (borrowed from library) The storyline is ok but the sex was uninspired, highly predictable & nothing even remotely like what really happens between a Dominant & submissive. I won't go to the movie!
