It is very rare for me to take 58 minutes out of my crazy day to watch anything on youtube...but this was worth every second. I actually found and watched a few of his other clips as well. Thank you for sharing love.
Yeah no problem. It was very eye opening I really enjoyed it my only problem is I doubt he's changed any minds. I feel like he only reaches people who already think this way. Those who don't refuse to.be swayed even an inch. Its really sad.
Obviously he's not going to reach every narrow minded individual, but if he reaches even a few...that's a change in the right direction. Baby steps love. We need more people like him who not only recognize the power of white privilege, but who also take that power and run with it to try and have a positive effect on others. It's not good enough to simply recognize that white privilege exists...people need to do something about it. I preach it all the time, but it can be as simple as speaking up when we see injustice in action. We aren't all equipped for public speaking as Tim Wise is...but we can all work to get the message out there in our own ways.
The jury always had the right NOT to believe Zimmerman's explanation of events that night. They could have had reasonable doubt anything he said occurred that evening was even true. He got off because he wasn't Black, Trayvon was, and the jury was nearly all White women. Has anyone ever seen someone who's really, REALLY had their face beaten up in a life-threatening attack?? There was nothing life threatening about the fight between GZ and TM, therefore no excuse to use deadly force in self-defense. Zimmerman admitted to having MMA training and I'm sure he covered up his face as he was trained to do to protect himself from blows by an opponent. To me this case was no different than the Casey Anthony acquittal, where the defendant was inexplicably given EVERY benefit of the doubt and assumption of truth by the jury.(Even worse in the Casey Anthony trial since the defense attorneys admitted their client was a pathological liar.) Nothing about GZ's story made sense to me, that's why I would have been comfortable charging him with manslaughter. Definitely White privilege was in play in that trial. There's just no way a BM gets the same verdict with the same jury after admitting to shooting dead an unarmed White teen.
I hear you, the problem is knowing something to be true and being able to prove it are two very different things in the eyes of the law. IMO the fact that there were no eye witnesses for the prosecution to disprove the "self defense" defense Zimmerman used was the key issue as to why he walked. Remember, the burden of proof is on the prosecution, not the defense.
But like Boba said no way would you have a dead white teen and a bm walk. It seemed way more about opinion than fact because if my head were bashed against pavement there would be more than a few scratches. Secondly how do you reach for a gun on your waist if your face is getting punched in? Instinct has tour hands close together where your face is not reaching for a gun on your waist. Also where are the pics from the crime scene photographer? Why the hell are we looking at pics taken by some guy with a cell phone? So much of this just sounded like pure bs. But being white gives you the benefit of the doubt.
No argument here, Zimmerman was asked if he had a headache the next day, and he said no, that should have been proof positive right there, no way you get your head bashed in a sidewalk multiple times and not have lingering affects the next day. All this is moot however, because of how the law is written for murder and manslaughter.
After looking at this presentation by Tim Wise, I knew he was speaking the truth. He spoke the HARD TRUTH. Anytime I hear or read a quote from someone who says the only way to succeed in the world is through hard work, or that misfortune and tragedy is a strength;while it is meant to be encouraging because this person who made it says so. There is some truth to this. However, who can benefit from that pearl of wisdom? A white person could buy into it and they are on their way. A non-white doesn't need to read or hear that because they've been working hard all their lives and are wondering if they will ever see the happy days. Or when someone says,"I did it on my own and had no one to help me and I didn't ask or want their help." Few can say that and own it. But, I think, no matter who you are, what you do, where you are going and how big an impact you make in this world, you had some help somewhere. During WW2, President Franklyn D. Roosevelt had wanted to set up a program after the war that all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic or religious background, would get education, housing and employment opportunities. Sadly, Roosevelt died and the plan died with him. It just was not enacted. But, some of it went to whites. People are afraid of equality because if all things were equal, no one is in charge. So,white men have to work diligently to maintain their domination and keep non-whites from gaining ascendency. Having said that, I will say this; I do not believe that the entire white race is evil. I just believe that they want it all and will ignore(or choose to do so) everyone else because they understand that these "others" want the same things. Like the news reports from the Gulf Coast after Katrina, a black family is carrying food. It is read that they looted the store. If a white family is carrying food, the white family found it. That is white privilege plain as day.
Conservatives always deny there is White Privilege and then label Black leaders "race hustlers". The real ones are the conservatives themselves both White and their shuffle-happy Black lackies.
