Trayvon Martin Mural: Miami Artist Huong Unveils Work At Florida Capitol

The work is 'We Are All Trayvon Martin,' a 50-feet-long, 8-feet-high mural unveiled by Miami artist Huong at the Florida capitol on Friday.


Huong, a Vietnam War refugee and peace activist, wanted to show solidarity with the Dream Defenders, who are in the midst of a month-long sit-in outside of Gov. Rick Scott's office to advocate against the state's Stand Your Ground law.

“The sorrow from [Trayvon Martin’s death] seemed to endlessly carry on, and African-American parents everywhere hugged their sons just that much tighter,” Huong said in a release.

"We decided not to stay quiet and make sure that we would be the voice Trayvon Martin was not allowed to keep. That is why we created this work, to ensure that everyone knows of the horrors that are still evident in our society and to educate the public on the monstrosity that is racism."

Huong hopes to take the mural on the road, eventually to Washington D.C.

At the first floor rotunda on Friday, Huong invited the public to write their own messages on the mural.

She also specifically invited Scott to sign the piece, which has portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln and Malcolm X.

"We all are Trayvon Martin," Huong said. "It is a new day, our country has suffered an ugly past, but we have the opportunity to make it a very beautiful future."

 

i love murals...but this is inappropriate...this should be about trayvon, his family and the people that loved him not about the shooter...

 

So all the of the other children that have been murdered, raped, tortured in Florida....do they get murals too?

 

I agree, however, I hope your words are unbiased. I do not understand the link between Dr. King and Mr. Zimmerman's acquittal....

 

I am very proud of the young voters who have rallied in the state capitol to lobby for change to Florida's gun laws, an end to the 'Stand Your Ground' defense and are engaging in peaceful civil disobedience. Best of luck to them.

I find the mural pretty disturbing. But then again, I find everything about a young, unarmed teen being followed, harassed and then killed for fearing for his safety and defending himself, troubling.

 

George Zimmerman should be there anyway Lippy. The mural would still be about Trayvon Martin and his family. That's what adds the significance to it so 20 years later, people won't forget and think it's just a mural of a bunch of black people that doesn't mean anything.

 

That is a powerful mural.

 

I do not agree...I doubt this country will forget trayvon martin...he gave his life in sacrifice...perhaps a martyr...to put Zimmerman on the mural is glorifying a killer...

the point of the mural should be that we are losing our children to senseless violence

I don't think the mural was very well done (at least the top pic with the killer in it), but I guess her heart is in the right place.

A better mural would be something more inspirational. Guns and blood ain't that.

 

let me ask you this...can you tell me the names of the last dozen teenage boys that died in this country over senseless violence?

I didn't think so....none of them became national news or a household name...

I believe that the day we are born that there is a life plan from A to Z...the path you choose to get to Z is considered free will but Z is inevitable...trayvon's "Z" day came up...

I realize that it is easier to just concentrate on the deed that happened to trayvon and his family...but did it ever occur to you that it happened for a reason?
