(CBS/AP) LAKESIDE, Calif. - Authorities say James DiMaggio, a man suspected of abducting a 16-year-old Southern California girl and her younger brother, might be armed with homemade explosives.

San Diego County Sheriff's Capt. Duncan Fraser said Thursday that evidence recovered at DiMaggio's home east of San Diego suggests he might have fled with explosives.

The search for Hannah Anderson and her younger brother Ethan has reached four Western states, Canada and Mexico. The FBI and various state and local law enforcement agencies are assisting.

Fraser says it's possible the 40-year-old DiMaggio was infatuated with the girl. Her mother, 42-year-old Christina Anderson, was found dead at DiMaggio's burning home near a dead child who might be the girl's younger brother.

Oregon state police said there was a possible sighting of DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa in northeast California near Alturas on Wednesday, followed by another possible sighting about 50 miles along the same highway near Lakeview, in south-central Oregon.

Also Wednesday, a friend of Hannah Anderson said DiMaggio told Hannah he had a crush on her and would date her if they were the same age.

James Lee Dimaggio, 40 (center) is pictured with Ethan Anderson, 8, and Hannah Anderson, 16, whose mother, Christina Anderson, 44, was one of two people found dead in a house fire Sunday night. An Amber Alert was in effect early Tuesday Aug. 6,2013 for the two missing children of Christina Anderson, whose body was found inside a burned rural house near the U.S.-Mexico border, and authorities said Dimaggio, suspected of killing the woman may have abducted the children.

DiMaggio explained that he didn't want the girls to think he was weird in an effort to defend himself after noticing they exchanged glances, 15-year-old Marissa Chavez said.

"She was a little creeped out by it. She didn't want to be alone with him," Chavez said.

DiMaggio was like an uncle to Hannah and Ethan. He had reportedly been very close with their parents for years.

Christina Anderson's father, Christopher Saincome, said Wednesday that his daughter visited DiMaggio's home last weekend to say goodbye before he moved to Texas.

DiMaggio, who works as a telecommunications technician at The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, was a regular presence at the Anderson family apartment in Lakeside, a suburb of 54,000 people.

"He must have had this planned," Saincome said.

Saincome said nothing seemed amiss when he called his daughter at work Friday to let her know she didn't call on his birthday. Anderson, a medical assistant, said she would call back that night but never did.

Investigators had no evidence that the relationship between DiMaggio and the missing girl was more than friendly. "We're not looking into that directly at this point," Giannantonio said.

Brett Anderson, the children's father, asked DiMaggio in a news conference Tuesday to let his daughter go.

Hannah Anderson unharmed in rescue that left James DiMaggio dead

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/...rescue-teen-doing-ok-20130810,0,3588407.story

CASCADE, Idaho -- Authorities in Idaho on Saturday divulged few details about how an FBI tactical agent had just shot and killed the suspected kidnapper and subject of a five-state Amber Alert.

James Lee DiMaggio, 40, was shot and killed at about 5:20 p.m. local time as ground units moved in on his camp, which was spotted from the air, authorities said.

Roughly one hour later, officials at news conference in Cascade, Idaho said Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old who DiMaggio allegedly abducted from an east San Diego County home, was recovered safely and recuperating from her ordeal in a hospital.

“Hannah is safe, and that was the best outcome we were hoping for, our top priority,” said Ada County sheriff’s spokeswoman Andrea Dearden.

Hannah did not appear to have any physical injuries, Dearden added.

“She does appear to be doing OK at this point,” Dearden said.

FBI Special Agent In Charge Mary Rook declined to divulge details of how the confrontation between agents and DiMaggio went down, citing protocols for first processing the crime scene and completing an initial investigation into the shooting.

She did say that the multi-agency task force faced a “very challenging situation” and that it would take “some time” to process the crime scene.

About an hour earlier, at a news conference in San Diego, County Sheriff Bill Gore said his team was notified minutes after DiMaggio had been killed.

“Obviously, we would have liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law, but that’s not going to be the case,” Gore said.

DiMaggio allegedly killed Hannah’s mother, Christina Anderson, and 8-year-old brother, Ethan, whose bodies were discovered Sunday in the suspect's burning home in eastern San Diego County.

Back in Cascade, Idaho, where at least 30 locals and vacationers had gathered to witness the news conference.

Reporters peppered officials on how the encounter between agents and DiMaggio transpired, but they remained tight-lipped, citing the ongoing investigation.

Patti Bolen, sheriff of Valley County, where the incident occurred, gave a brief statement.

“Hannah is safe and that was our first priority from the very beginning,” she said.

After a short round of questions, she and collage of local and federal officials left the microphone stand and started walking to their awaiting cars, at which point the crowd of onlookers broke into applause, with some shouting “thank you!”

Officials on Saturday said they planned to get Hannah’s father, Brett Anderson, to Idaho to be with his daughter in the morning.

Since his daddy tried to do the same thing, you know he would have got some slick lawyer that would have made him out to be the victim.

That's why the cops shot his ass dead, Calif lawyers and Cali law is just as screwed up as Florida.

It's not looking good for Hannah.

She has been on social media running her mouth and is not mourning the way you would think.

The FBI has gone thru DiMaggio house and found letters written by Hannah to him.

The Sheriffs dept won't discuss what is in the letter.

CNN has story on their website and TV.

I'm on my phone, I'll post info when I get on my computer.

I noticed that! I saw pics of her and she is dressed in low cut t, all dolled up, smiling like she is a celeb enjoying all the media spotlight on her. I put it down to either she does not understand how she is coming off, or she is trying to emotionally deny/bury anything happened to her.

But this prior 'letters to him' is startling. Did he have some kind of hold over her?

James DiMaggio Could Be The Father Of Hannah?

    Shit gets weirder every week..........

James DiMaggio family requests DNA samples for Hannah Anderson, her brother

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/21/us/hannah-anderson-james-dimaggio-case/

(CNN) -- James DiMaggio's family is requesting DNA samples from the family of Hannah Anderson, the 16-year-old girl he's accused of kidnapping and whose mother and brother were found dead in his burned home.

The reason? They want to know if he was Hannah and 8-year-old Ethan's biological father, a family spokesman said.

"We are going to be requesting from the Anderson family that we try to get DNA samples from Hannah. And if they have anything left from Ethan, that we get a DNA sample," family spokesman Andrew Spanswick told CNN***********0066cc] [/color]affiliate KGTV. "There has been a lot of rumors that Jim might be the father of either or both children."

Reached by CNN, Spanswick said DiMaggio's sister, Lora, is making the request, but would not elaborate further.

A representative for the Anderson family appeared to shoot down the theory.

"Brett and Tina Anderson did not meet Mr. DiMaggio until the sixth month of Tina's pregnancy with Hannah. Brett Anderson's DNA was used to identify the body of his dead son Ethan Anderson," the family statement said.

There was a time when the Hannah Anderson abduction case seemed clear-cut.

DiMaggio, a close Anderson family friend, allegedly kills Hannah's mother and brother, burns his house down, kidnaps Hannah and goes on the run. After a frantic week-long manhunt, he is spotted in the Idaho wilderness and shot dead by an FBI agent. Hannah is safe and reunited with her father.

    That was on August 10.

With each passing day since then, the case has taken on added complexity.

On Monday, the Anderson family spokeswoman told CNN that DiMaggio, 40, left a life insurance policy from his job as a telecommunications tech that named Hannah and Ethan's grandmother, Bernice Anderson, as the beneficiary.

Stacy Hess, the spokeswoman, did not know the dollar amount but other media outlets put it at around $110,000.

"We find it very strange that he has left all this money without any explanation," Spanswick told KGTV, in explaining the need for the DNA tests.

"It states specifically that he didn't want to give it to either parent cause he didn't trust them," Spanswick said, referring to Hannah's parents.
The Anderson children called DiMaggio "Uncle Jim." One search warrant referred to Hannah's mother as DiMaggio's "best friend's wife."

    Then there is this.

Hannah was seen in a car with DiMaggio about 20 hours before he allegedly set fire to his house, police said Tuesday.

The two were seen in DiMaggio's blue Nissan Versa just after midnight Sunday, August 4, said San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell. She confirmed reporting from the Los Angeles Times that the two were spotted at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.
Caldwell did not say what the two were doing together, or if Hannah Anderson was with DiMaggio voluntarily.

CNN was unable to get an Anderson family response to this revelation.

Some of Hannah's actions have raised eyebrows in some quarters.
A friend of Hannah's told authorities "DiMaggio took her on multiple day trips," according to a search warrant.

The same document said phone records indicate the two "called each other approximately 13 times" shortly before both their phones were turned off around 4 p.m. (7 p.m. ET) on August 4.

That was around the time that Hannah was picked up from cheerleading practice at Sweetwater High School, the warrant says, while noting it wasn't known who picked her up.

The same document says that a fire was reported at around 8 p.m. later that day at DiMaggio's two-story log cabin and a detached garage in Boulevard, California.

After battling the fire, authorities found the bodies of the teenager's mother, Christina Anderson, and Ethan.

An affidavit claimed that both had been "tortured and killed" by DiMaggio, who then set his home and garage ablaze.

A fire captain found Christina Anderson face down in the garage, covered with a tarp, and with a crowbar and what appeared to be blood next to her head.

An Amber Alert was issued the next day.

The ordeal ended about 1,000 miles from where it started, on August 10, when an FBI tactical agent shot and killed DiMaggio in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, about 15 miles outside Cascade, Idaho.
As to Hannah, she was physically unharmed and soon returned to her family in Southern California.

The teenager hasn't spoken publicly or with reporters since the ordeal. But she did field anonymous questions on the website ask.fm, according to Alan MacNabb, whose son is one of Hannah's closest friends.

In those comments, she said DiMaggio had apparently set some kind of a timing device to start the blaze at his home. She also said she did not want to go with her "dad's best friend" and that, had she tried to escape from him, "He would have killed me."

San Diego County deputies searching DiMaggio's charred home found a handwritten note, handcuff box, camping equipment, a DNA swab kit, two used condoms and letters from Hannah, according to an affidavit.

Contents of the letters and the handwritten note were not revealed in the affidavit.
