    The Final Boss

The enemy that stands between you and your desired outcome to see a resolution of epic proportions. Whether we're talking about god-like entities who have the intention of ending life as we know it or masterminds with brilliant intellect willing to control the world or some personal objective involving oneself, you can't help but remember the times when you played through some of the most memorable games and fighting against a memorable boss as part of a finale.

Pictures? Videos? Feel free to post your favorite final bosses. And also, if they have multiple forms, feel free to post the videos all on one post.

So without further adieu, here is the thread devoted to the Final Bosses in Gaming! ENJOY!!!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

    Final Boss: Ganondorf/Ganon

Description: In this legendary battle, we see Link reaching to the top of Ganon's Castle and there, he sees Zelda trapped in a crystallized structure. The battle ensues and there's the escape, which leads to the grand finale in his true form. This epic battle has been considered one of the greatest final boss fights of all time and with good reason.

Why is it great? The sheer scale of an epic fight done right. During that time, we hardly found games of any measure to be this grand, with the exception of JRPGs. But in this case, for an adventure game, this finale made you feel empowered, willing, fearful, yet courageous. Once you downed Ganon, you were able to deliver the final blow, in which it involves slashes and then a stand through the nose, blood flying everywhere.

(NOTE: Prior to the Million Selling cartridge, Ganon actually oozed out red blood instead of the green we see today.)

    Final Fantasy VII

    Final Boss: Sephiroth

Description: Cloud and company finally reaches the core of the planet, only to find Sephiroth trying to summon Meteor to destroy the already dystopian looking world. Hell bent on achieving his goal, he took in more of Jenova's cells and finally unleashing his final desperate move: the final battle. After that, Cloud and Sephiroth duke it out in one last attempt...with Cloud delivering a HEAVILY fatal blow.

Why is it great? While I personally found the game and their characters vastly overrated, there's no denying that this game popularized the RPG genre and the sheer scope of epic battles made it all the more mesmerizing. With RPGs before it, the final battles were multiple in form. However, in this case, the 3D models and animation further strengthens the significance of the fight and this is no different.

    Chrono Trigger

    Final Boss: Lavos

Description: Crono and his group travels to the End of Time to finally put a stop to Lavos, who's slowly been sapping away the energy from the planet as it continues to incubate inside the earth's core. Struggling to find the means to combat a massive entity like this, the group heads onward and challenges it, only to see that this final boss isn't anything like the others.

Why is it great? The final battle was simply epic, but the thing that really stood out was that it had a little unconventional way of dealing with the boss. Normally when fighting the enemy, you'd have to destroy the main components. The second form, while it had the main body and the two "nuts"...it fooled the gamer into thinking that the main body is the big target. However, it turned out that you have to attack the right testicle. Very shocking, but very effective. Plus, this is a difficult final boss, so grinding won't do you much good.

You should go ahead and follow the format of one final boss per post. But yeah...those are really good finds, bro!

    Super Metroid

    Final Boss: Mother Brain

Description: After trekking around, Samus Aran finally has to come face to face with Mother Brain.

Why is it great? It's a remake of the original Metroid (technically), but with some added content and updated visuals. However, Mother Brain is anything but the same creature. Unlike the original, where it was just a brain in a glass, it actually has a second form, which could ultimately kill you, until a baby Metroid comes in to save you. In light of that, you're bestowed one final gift: the hyper beam and decimate your foe once and for all.

As Ripley would say: "Get away from her you BITCH!"

    Final Boss: Kefka

Description: Finally reached Kefka at the top of his domain, the heroes are going to face him in one grand finale. With the power of the Magicite in Kefka's embrace, he has transcended beyond that of a normal human. Instead, he grows into an angelic deity and now we have to finally commit deicide in order to end this tyranny.

Why is it great? Out of all of the bosses in gaming history, he's perhaps the most symbolic. It's like a perverse ascension out of Dante's Inferno and we're also witnessing some artworks being portrayed in this final fight...all of which symbolizes the different stages of Kefka and his personality. It's not until you reach the final plateau will you see him in his "Perfect Form" - Angel Kefka. And unlike other villains, he shows no remorse in his nihilistic ways. Plus, he succeeded in destroying the world, which is something no other villain has done.

That and Dancing Mad is perhaps one of the greatest final boss songs in history of gaming. Far better than One Winged Angel.

    Castlevania IV

    Final Boss: Dracula

Description: Simon Belmont reaches the top of Dracula's castle. As he ascends, he knows all too well that this fight will remain etched into his memory. Confronting the Dark Lord, he tirelessly fight on...

Why is it great? This was one of the last great Castlevania games of this kind before it became more of a Action-RPG style game. Not only that, going through the challenges in the whole game, leading up to this conclusion not only tested your wits, reflexes, and memory, but it built up your personal resolve as you fight Dracula. Truly a magnificent fight!

    Demon's Crest

(Disclaimer: This part is technically a two-part post, solely because once you've completed the final boss Phalanx, you go through the game again with the Infinity Crest and defeat the True Final Boss - Demon Lord)

    Final Boss: Phalanx/Demon Lord

Description: Challenging Phalanx for supreme control of the darkened demon world, you hold the Crests of power which enables you to challenge your arch nemesis. Upon defeating him, you're granted the power of Infinity, which is essentially all other powers combined with its own powerful attack. From there, you venture into the hidden building and control the Demon Lord himself for supreme control of the demon world.

Why is it great? This is one of the most difficult games to beat and the final bosses are no walk in the park. For Phalanx, a barrage of fire balls and demon shots make it almost hard as you're flying and jumping on platforms to avoid them. Regarding the Demon Lord, he's practically one hellish beast that takes a long time to kill and you're practically at a disadvantage. Still, the reward of beating him is a pat on the back as you've completed one of the hardest bosses in gaming history.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

Final Boss: Dark Bowser/Dark Star Core

Description: The Dark Star has cloned Bowser into his own Dark Bowser. With Mario and Luigi inside the King of the Koopas, they go to his castle to retake the throne, first attacking Dark Bowser, then going after the Dark Star Core which lies within the dark tyrant. From there, Mario and Luigi can attack the source of this power.

Why is it great? The Mario and Luigi series by Alpha Dream is one of the many RPG franchises for Nintendo and they deliver en masse. Mixed with smart humor and excellent gameplay, the final boss fight was most refreshing outside of the typical JRPG realm. Not only that, it's refreshing to see Mario, Luigi and Bowser working together to rescue Peach, though the villain simply wants his kingdom back. Fighting two beasts in one is nothing new, but it's a fresh take on an old formula.

    Xenoblade Chronicles

    Final Boss: Zanza

Description: Shulk and his crew encounters Zanza and he goes on to explain that Shulk and the Monado was the key to all of his plan. The god who created existence will reward him by serving as one of his Disciples. That and also eradicate Bionis (where Homs/Humans live).

Why is it great? With lackluster JRPGs in the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii console wars, the Wii provided a breath of fresh air. Veterans of the RPG genre (Xenogears, Chrono Cross) provided a much needed quality game of massive proportions. Playing on the familiar theme of overcoming entities greater than yourself, Xenoblade Chronicles and Zanza are a testament that some ideas can remain fresh with the right story.

The sheer scope of fighting on another plane of existence draws about an epic battle between those who are clearly less than gods facing their creator...and bound to destroy him once and for all.
