    I thought this was a good idea for a thread.

    Free on line articles.

    The first one is about Baumgartner's leap from almost 130,000 feet. Beating Kittinger's jump made in the 60s and have stood until Baumgartner made his jump.
    Kittinger used a drouge parachute to stabilize and avoid spins in the low density air. These can pull several machs and thus, can be lethal. He therefore did not reach mach 1, the sound barrier, that wasn't his goal however. Baumbgartner did, with out drouge and reached supersonic speeds.

    The other one from the same Vanity Fair volume is this incredibly convoluted (unintentional) murder mystery in Beaumont, Texas. A must read. Unbelievable interesting. Almost stuff made from movies, but you can't make this stuff up.

    I enjoyed the Vanity Fair piece on Sammy Davis Jr.and Kim Novak.
