Prevent what? To make a long story short, I was 20 years old visiting Greece. I needed to print a roll of negatives as I was leaving the next day and a photographer was closing for the day. He said he would stay to print them, to come in and wait. Me and him in his photo store, well he's developing them, and he's showing me what he is doing as he develops them, when suddenly he just grabbed me and shoved me to the floor and attempted to sexually assault me! We struggled and I fought him off and ran out of there traumatized. So you never know when you are in a normal scenario and can possibly be raped.
You are right in that, Bilss.but I try to explain something else. I am not defending men that rape women. The case in Dubai was that she was with her co-worker, drinking alcohol, having a Party..She says that he raped her, what she couldn't prove. Having sex and drinking alcohol is both forbidden in UAE. The court didn't believe her and sentenced him to 13 month for having sex outside marriage and her to 13 months either, plus 3 month for consuming alcohol. (they've had the Problem that she made this case public) What I've meant, was, that in countries, where they act like this, controlling sexual activities, you cannot have a Party with one single man. As an european woman, of course I think different, I am used to women rights, but I have to accept that when I put one foot on another Country, I have to follow their rules. When you are in Dubai, you see tons of east european prostitutes, seeking for a rich sheikh, running around in High Heels and skirts a little bit brider than a belt. Offering sex in every Hotel or Restaurant, it wouldn't be like this, if they would all be in jail. The woman will go back to Norway, I am sure. The guy is sitting already in jail.
I agree. I think my coworker only felt safe because she was traveling with her husband. That's a whole different story than being by yourself (even though that Indian girl got raped in a bus WITH her boyfriend beside her). I'm gonna go to Spain or Italy instead. There are still so many beautiful cities with historical buildings that I want to see! I'm not gonna put myself at risk. I know how to behave in different cultures and I respect foreign laws/traditions/religions. But no woman should fear for her wellbeing or life just because she is a woman, that's ridiculous. None of these women did anything wrong, yet they are the ones that get punishment. Stuff like that can easily happen to me or any other woman, no matter how careful or smart.
Things are heating up since that story a lot of media outlets are reporting that insident. No doubt there will be a boycott. I would not be surprised if there would be protests at the U.A.E embassy in Oslo.
How are you going to prove rape in a system that don't recognize it and take it as 'sex outside marriage'? I think that is what upsets people. as far as i understand, her chances to go home I'd slim to none. She will most likely have to serve her sentence first. Drinking in a country where it is forbidden is of course risky and not so wise but that is really not the point here. To me, this is more an upset over the lack of justice for women, whether she was a foreign or a domestic woman. The fact that she is Norwegian is besides the point IMO. Not much anyone can do, its their law, but people can be upset over the fact.
you know FG, as an european woman with my understanding of justice, of course, this is insane. But my concern is, that many times I have to see that people travel to countries and think they are at home. For me, as a world traveller, to come home safe, you have to follow and to respect their understanding of law and to act that I don't come in trouble. In Dubai, 85% are foreigners, all our european rich people or celebs have a house or appartment there. What I am trying to say, is, that Dubai is extremely internationally. No one follows you automatically, because you are drinking alcohol or you have sexual activities. She should have solved her problem privatly, not making it public. Now she is in that fucked up System. How many times is a foreigner sentenced to 20/30 yrs in jail, because of drug trafficking i.e. in Singapore? These tourists have heroin in their bag. Everyone knows, that this person is innocent that someone else put it in her his bag, but still, they will go in jail, because the law is that strict.
Sharia countries are usually awful. Dubai usually has areas around the hotels for foreigners to drink, party, lease, etc. But you have to remember that you're in a sharia law country. If you're a women going to Muslim countries or places like India. Definitely should bring a guy with you.
I glad he said what he said, because you don't know what you are talking about, and your comment reeked with ignorance. It is like me saying All American blacks are drug dealers/drug addicts, having many babies by different women, high school drop out, criminals, and this is what the American media portrayed for all the entire world to see, but did i fall for that. Anyone with any common sense will realize that is not the full story. Lastly, BTW African is not a country, but consist of many different nations, with multiple languages, religions, cultures, and sometimes races, in other words it is not some sought of weird monolith. Also, i thought this thread was about a woman being rape, but you are mentioning something that is totally unrelated, which does not make sense. In other words, still to the damn topic, which is about a women that was raped, and is suffering for it.
not too long ago we had to go to africa (obama's staff) and rescue a woman (on a mission trip) from the country of sudan. the congo is still going thru a civil war and somalia still is fighting. ghee... you go right ahead and visit. yes, the continent. south africa i probably cool but for the most part hell naw
I think goodlove is referring to the civil rights laws, save South Africa, where the African continent is way behind, even in countries like the Middle East. Sure, we [the outside media] only deliver a glimpse of what's going on, but they aren't fabrications by a long shot. There are a lot of good in many countries in Africa, but if you're a female or gay, you will have a hard time cementing your rights as an equal person in the eyes of the law.
exactly. bro's dont watch the news. they just think africa consist of south africa. hell, the "middle east" is africa on top of that. they just dont want it associated with blacks. egypt is going thru hell. the arab spring...anyone anyone? why would I want to go there and risk getting kidnapped or get caught in a cross fire
LOL....."all of africa"....according to him I said it was a country. LOL thanks for pointingthat out. I forgot about that he was just following up behind flaming.
I'd have to do some DEEP research before I chose to go to a country in Africa. If a country has civil wars and school kids being shot and bombed by insurgents n' shit stacked on top of other shit, I'll pass....unless I got sent there for work somehow. There are a ton of other foreign destinations on my travel list. Not against going to Africa, but it isn't on my priority list either.
