Just a question about fitness standards for women in European countries.

I was just looking at the film "Casino" with Joe Pesci & Robert DeNiro with a friend and there is a scene where DeNiro & Pesci are looking at the showgirls on stage and they talk about the difference between american and european "brawds"

Pesci says "You forgetin' how lazy them european brawds get" in reference to one of the showgirls being alittle overweight.

then i recently asked a friend who has spent lots of time in europe and he said "yeah that's true they don't really take care of themselves"

and s few other dudes i know have said similar things. but is it just a particular country, or is generation thing (specific age group) (18-35) vs (40 & Up)or is this a stereotype / myth?

I don't know how accurate this is, but here in the states its an understatement to say there is a fitness obsession here in the states but whats the scenario in other european countries.

i mean it can't all be true. i mean this is some proof that it isn't totally true.

A comment about "they dont really take care of them selves" is really borada isnt it? He may not have meant fitness??

As a general rule, and I apologize, Europeans generally eat better and are less over-weight that the US so I dont get that Europeans would be less fgir compared to the US 60% over weight.
Some countries in Europe is catching up, but in general many countries obesity is not as common as here and morbidly obese, is very rare.

Im thinking your stirring in the pot as it really doesnt make any sense.

It is not even a stereotype or a myth - I never heard anything like that -probably more the opposite.

C'mon - just go look at the list of worlds most obese countries - 2 European countries on there at no 25 or so - Greece and Malta.

It is not the answer that enlightens, but the question.

5 Fittest Spots in the World

    Southeast Asia .

    Luxembourg and Switzerland.

    Scandinavia .

    Romania .

Compared to the over weight % in the US that I just saw is 74%, number 2 on obesity after The Pacific Island.

As compared to Scandinavia, Luxembourg and Switzerland and Romania which is around 10%.
Here is a list of the 10 most obese countries
(% of overweight people) in Europe:

    1. Malta 68.7
    2. Greece 68.5
    3. Andorra 63.8
    4. United Kingdom 63.8
    5. Monaco 62.4
    6. San Marino 62.1
    7. Iceland 60.4
    8. Germany 60.1
    9. Slovenia 59.8
    10. Finland 58.7

Still below The US - even though many countries are catching up -take into account the countries I mentioned with extremely low rates of obesity.

Having that said, the beauty standards in Europe may differ from the US and that may be a part of the impression of "taking care of themselves" but that has nothing to do with fitness but rather other aspects.

Yes,in Germany the rate of overweighed people surely has increased, and as a side effect there have been new gyms opening left and right within the past few years.
In my town I know of 2 large new gyms that have opened not soooo long ago.
Many people do want to improve their weight and fitness.

I had heard that Sweden was said to have fit and athletic people. How come Sweden is not listed?

I have seen a much higher mean average for overall health and fitness among Asian and European citizens, due mostly to diet and lifestyle, but US citizens outperforming them at both extremes with both the most obese (by a large margin) and the most hyper-fit people (body nazi, 2% body fat types) on the planet. As with everything, we overdo it.

    "Europe". Which part of it?

From what I've seen growing up in Sweden and now living in Norway people are fit in general. I've never been to the US though so I can't compare.

Unfortunately, Europe is following the USA trend of fast food and snacking.
And drinking sugar rich drinks like Coke.

North of Stockholm must had been cold during Winter. What is the difference in Sweden and Norway? I know there is competition in the alcohol prices.

I've never complained about it being too warm, that's for sure ;)

Not much difference. Very similar language (can talk swedish in Norway and vice versa), similar people and culture. Norway's a bit richer thanks to the oil. Higher salaries but also higher living costs. Norweigans who lives right by the border usually go over to Sweden for shopping whilst a lot of swedes go to Norway to work for a couple of years.

Sweden and Norway actually had a union about 100 years ago.
