Minimum mandatory sentencing is why. Her mistake was firing the gun at her husband's head while he stood there with his kids, That added the counts/is considered the felony part.

I read the Judge was very grieved to have had to give her the sentence. But he HAD to do it by law.
It's like Cali's 3 Strikes law. Even if the three felonies didn't involve seriously hurting people, you get put away for life.

And drug sentences too. Ridiculous minimum mandatory years are given in FL. They were designed for the BIG DRUG CARTEL LEADERS, but your heart will hurt when you read the stories of petty dealer men in jail for it. They got snagged in the sentence laws, like this woman did.

I wonder if tensions would be this high for a not guilty verdict if the pictures plastered all over the TV looked like this instead...

The losers in this case are Zimmerman and Martin. The winners, and cash cows, and race baiters, are MSNBC, CNN and Faux News. It's sickening the power the media has in this country now..

Quit stereotyping Trayvon with every social dysfunction in the Black community.

The kid was NEVER arrested for a crime in his life, which is far too typical of many 'troubled' Black teens. In fact knowing Trayvon never had a run in with law enforcement tells me he wasn't a future criminal statistic.

You do realize your argument is justifying what happened to him??
The kid was racially profiled because of his skin color. Zimmerman fucked up every step of the way that night. Never should have gotten out of his car. He never should have followed him in the first place.

When he did confront Trayvon, the first thing out of his mouth should have been his name, the fact he was allegedly representing neighborhood watch, that he used to live in this community and simply didn't recognize Trayvon.

Instead, Zimmerman was tripping because in HIS mind he'd caught a burglar before he was about to rob another condo. That assumption is why an innocent teenager is dead.

BTW there are literally thousands of Black men who end up on the wrong side of the law who weren't engaged in any criminal activity. I know it's hard for some of you to believe, but when you are Black in America, the moment you leave your crib you are a target for law enforcement.

Whether or not you have a previous criminal history really has nothing to do with it.

Also, the most 'criminal' thing most Black men ever do is smoke and sell weed. I believe something like 60+% of incarcerated Black males are there for non-violent drug offenses.

    Chew on that.

    Bliss,
Put aside redefining SYG for a moment. ..it benefits all responsible Florida citizens. ..they love the law...criminals with guns are welcome to stand their ground too..........But let us suppose that instead of those jurors, you were tasked with seating that jury. ...Let us further suppose that you seated Bliss, Ches, Ali, Tam, FG and Cherok.....Do you believe that jury could be objective enough to follow the judges instructions to the letter of the law to determine specifically if this manslaughter was justified in self defense. .....Or would that jury throw out the instructions like the simpson jury and act subjectively. ...

People are outraged because an unarmed kid was profiled and had life taken and the killer walks free. Archman responds by reminding us that the killer was vindicated by the countries legal system.

Sheesh man.... how detached from basic humanity are you?

At this point my humanity or humanity don't matter a hill of beans. ...I was asking Bliss how closely could she follow jury instructions. .

I would hope that she wouldn't follow them too closely. Righteousness should supersede law.

That picture is victim blaming, pure and simple.

How is Zimmerman a loser? He gets to go home and sleep in his own bed. He is also the new poster boy for Black hating scum bags.

The only losers here are Trayvon, his family, and any sense of security young Black men might of had in this country.

The US Government is planning on eventually taking over the case against Zimmerman. If they proceed, they should do a much better job than the prosecutors from the state of Florida.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/14/justice-department-george-zimmerman_n_3595835.html

If the Government does in fact determine that a prosecutable violation can't be made and they can't create a case, then George Zimmerman was completely in the right to do what he did.

I don't think he can be tried again. Double jeopardy.

But the legal eagles would need to weigh in.

    @the maturity comment:
Here's a thought...stop posting hateful bigotry on a site DEDICATED to BLACK men and perhaps you wouldn't be told to go off and blow another man.

But stupid is as stupid DOES..

You can't ask for mature response to your bullshit immature horse shit.

    Hypocrite

They could make an exception though because it's Florida. Florida's laws are unique from other states. Without the Stand Your Ground law, the case may have had a different outcome. Also, go here:

    http://www.lipstickalley.com/f233/hell-florida-justice-system-540705/

A black man basically did the same thing several years ago and the state's court system gave him a charge of manslaughter.
