Not all nations or all teams have this problem. It has a lot to do with the political and regional histories of each team. There are some ethnic minority teams in Spain that have higher shares of non-whites on them and are more open than others. Same can be said for England, German, France, etc. Chelsea Headhunters, anyone?

O4,I just glad that Spain lost to Brazil. It was so frustrating that they are winning World and Euro Cups. I have no love for Spain.

Same here. Brazil came to win and Spain didn't show up.

Anyone watching this excellent U-20 World Cup quarterfinal game between Ghana and Chile on ESPN? It's in extra time now with Chile up 3-2 in the 107th minute.

Update: Ghana came back in the second half of extra time to equalize, and then pulled off a dramatic goal in the last minute for the win, 4-3! Brilliant!

No European country has won the world cup on South American soil. It would be an affront to a Continent that has produced some of the world's most gifted players to sit and allow an European team to come beat them on their continent.

Never fear. Judging by the way Brazil handled Spain a couple of weeks ago, they don't stand a chance against Brazil at home during World Cup.

And Brazil has a 12 year drought O4 correct me if I'm wrong.

It will be a 12-year drought by next year. But judging by that decisive thrashing they handed out, that drought is over. :)

    You're joking a bit right?

I'll always root for Brazil when they're not playing against any of my countries(birth or naturalized) but the Confed cup win is not the best barometer for next years performance. It bodes well especially with the lift the home crowd can produce(definitely a greater lift than even France received in 98) but this was a Spain team coming off another lengthy European season, playing every summer since 2008, with players itching to get to Madeira/Ibiza and all the other cool Island spots to vacay before the club seasons start up again. Not to say Spain didn't want to win it but I think we'll see them take things up a notch next summer.

I still think Brazil could give Spain a good match again if they meet next summer but a thorough beating like the Confed cup one? No way.

I'm joking a bit, but only a bit. I think Spain have a couple of problems that are only going to worsen as we head toward next year's Cup.
    1) Injured defenders: Puyol, on whom Spain as depended for as long as I can remember, has been hobbled by injuries and is only getting older. Pique has been injured and is not back to top form and his mind is arguably elsewhere (if you had been busy making a baby with Shakira, wouldn't your mind be elsewhere too? :) )
    2) Goalie? Iker Casillas' clock is still ticking as well. They have been acting like he's the only goalie on Earth, even as his days of taking Geritol loom ever closer. They'd better get their hat in their hand and go after De Gea.
    3) A tendency to go for marquis names instead of some of their more consistent journeymen. Anyone remember their decision to chase the brilliant but inconsistent Fabregas instead of dependable journeyman Soldado from Valencia?
    4) Lack of time playing together. Many of the top Spanish scorers are now on sides where they are second fiddle to arguably better players from other countries, so they are not getting the sort of regular season playing time together that they are used to, allowing them to gel together. Barça is better known as the Messi show. Real is (was) the Ronaldo show. Falcao dominated the Atletico attack, and so on.

But then I could be totally off-base too. Lol

With the USA winning the Gold Cup, it should give them a confidence booster in the WCQ

Most definitely. And especially so, with some of the more unheralded players stepping up and proving their mettle, like Wondolowski, et al. There's more depth in the US squad than I ever remember before.

Brazil have only won one of their World Cups on European soil Sweden 1958, all the other South American wins have come when the finals were hosted outside Europe.

As for the European teams that could win the World Cup next year alot of that will come down to how well they deal with weather conditions.

    Muy bien dicho, Caerdydd!

I don't think the Europeans will handle the humidity well.
