lets define first . per websters a plate cast from a printing surface 2 : something conforming to a fixed or general pattern; especially : a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment an excerpt from wiki The term stereotype derives from the Greek words ??????? (stereos), "firm, solid"[4] and ????? (typos), "impression,"[5] hence "solid impression". The term comes from the printing trade and was first adopted in 1798 by Firmin Didot to describe a printing plate that duplicated any typography. The duplicate printing plate, or the stereotype, is used for printing instead of the original. The first reference to "stereotype" in its modern use in English, outside of printing, was in 1850, in a noun, meaning "image perpetuated without change."[6] But it was not until 1922 that "stereotype" was first used in the modern psychological sense by American journalist Walter Lippmann in his work Public Opinion.[7] Functions Social functions: social categorization Explanation purposes[edit] Stereotypes can be used to explain social events.[12][21] Henri Tajfel[12] gave the following example: Some people found that the anti-Semitic contents of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion only made sense if the Jews have certain characteristics. According to Tajfel,[12] Jews were stereotyped as being evil, as yearning for world domination, etc., because these stereotypes could explain the anti-Semitic ‘facts’ as presented in The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Justification purposes[edit] People create stereotypes of an outgroup to justify the actions that their ingroup has or plans to commit towards that outgroup.[12][20][21] For example, according to Tajfel,[12] Europeans stereotyped Turkish, Indian, and Chinese people as being incapable of achieving financial advances without European help. This stereotype was used to justify European colonialism in Turkey, India, and China. Intergroup differentiation[edit] An assumption is that people want their ingroup to have a positive image relative to outgroups, and so people want to differentiate their ingroup from relevant outgroups in a desirable way.[12] If an outgroup does not affect the ingroup’s image, then from an image preservation point of view, there is no point for the ingroup to be positively distinct from that outgroup.[12] People can actively create certain images for relevant outgroups by stereotyping. People do so when they see that their ingroup is no longer as clearly and/or as positively differentiated from relevant outgroups, and they want to restore the intergroup differentiation to a state that favours the ingroup.[12][21] ===================================================== have you ever actually caught yourself doing it? what did you do about it? do you see it now that you may have thought on it? Is it good to stereotype? why is it good or bad to do so? yoiu can never control someone else to do better so concentrate on yourself.
have you ever actually caught yourself doing it? - Yes, on multiple occasions. Not just to others, but also with myself. I don't really get bothered by people stereotyping me since I know who I am as a person. There's no point in getting angry since a stereotype is a generalized assumption about a collective group. what did you do about it? - I don't bother with the responses. Just disregard it or simply address it in a concise manner that says, "Hey...at least I can do (insert activity), no?" do you see it now that you may have thought on it? - Sure. If I see a group of black people playing sports, it just means they are athletic and can do the job right. Or if I watch interracial porn and see a giant black dick, I just look at my own pecker and see if it matches. Is it good to stereotype? - It's only good if it builds your own level of confidence and it depends on the stereotype. why is it good or bad to do so? - If you continue to allow certain things be perpetuated, then the only people who will confide to all that would be the ones who allow it to be. You know you have certain talents, moral codes, etc...and you're more mature to know that all actions are universal, regardless of background or features.
great answers....fantastic but I should have worded the questions better because I was gearing the questions as more at yourself . meaning "what did you do about it?" it was in reference to so you caugfht yourself stereotyping ..what did you do about it
ok my bad. I didnt read it much deeper after the first response. got you. yeah, I have to catch myself. i get like that and I try to pluck it out my spirit
Well it depends do you want to be judged by your actions or others? Seems like they hurt more than they help.
Think about all the negative stereotypes surrounded around being black do you want to spend your life being held responsible for the actions of low lives or based on things you do? Even positive ones can be hurtful like all Asians being good at math can you imagine how hard it for those who aren't good at it. They are seen as less than like something is wrong with them. Stereotypes pigeon hole people from being their best selves. More importantly it divides people we have enough of that shit without adding to it.
It's human nature and will always be there. Subconsciously all of us stereotype one way or the other and we normally notice it when we are being stereotyped and not when we are stereotyping
