Oh wow, I remember this when it was first posted now that you reminded me. Gosh, such an awesome Ad :heart:. And yet it didn't get the flack the Cheerios Ad did. So what is going on here? Is it because there is a CHILD involved? I just don't get it Truly I don't.

This is so true. Back before the civil war, when the country was mainly on the east coast, there was an article written by Benjamin Franklin about all of the mixed raced kids in Philadelphia. The attraction between bm/ww were obvious back then when this country was barely a country. The reason "miscegenation laws" were created was to stop the bm/ww relationship. From before Thomas Jefferson on up to the present day, wm feels it's ok for him to be with whomever he wants.
Sort of. The real problem is that the Cheerios commercial normalizes and humanizes BM (and average looking BM) in a way that some would prefer not to see. The guy in the Cream Cheese commercial was a model type, so the detractors could rationalize it away as two excessively good looking people who only have sex in common, which is more tolerable as it still allows for BM marginalization in their minds about the nature of the fictitious couple. The Cheerios ad left no room for fantasy about the relationship of the people. The child, which appeared to have a healthy loving relationship with both parents, was the ultimate seal of disapproval from the detractors.

You hit it on the head AT. When a stereotype is not justified and don't live up to the standards of racists there is backlash. Loved the commerciala and the others some I had not seen before.
It would be something. Cheerios is not like Benetton products back in the 80's. I often felt a great deal of comfort going into a Benetton store and looking at the large photographs of every person of every race hanging out and having a good time playing soccer or other sports. Those images were powerful. Benetton isn't around anymore. I sure do miss the united colors of Benetton.

I remember Benetton from the mid-80's. I think Benetton needs to return. With the way things are now, even if it were an art gallery with only the photographs, it would be a positive thing.
