I'm already aware of there is a being referred to as The Presence, but you're overlooking one critical component. The Presence isn't the theistic entity that a lot of people come to believe in the Judeo-Christian mythology. If anything, it's more accurate to call The Presence something else entirely. So yeah, I would still say he's a rather intelligent person. He just prefer to see that everything has a rational explanation, unlike some people who take everything as is. And again, may I remind you that he's not quick to be lazy and subject himself to anything less. I wouldn't be surprised of Superman, given his upbringing with his parents. But one would assume that as he started to explore more of the universe and his adventures, he may have developed a more spiritual, nonreligious affiliation over the course of time. But this definitely a good find. I was looking for religious affiliations of superheroes here alongside their political affiliations. If only I can find a site for that, that would be perfect. Great link, TDK. Great link here.
I don't think the movie would have come out if he wasn't in the series. It gave the character more fans.
According to the link he stopped actually going to church as a teen but still consulted with his pastor as an adult. He seemed to struggle a lot with finding the good in humanity.
That is true. He still felt that there is good in people and strongly believe in it, so as long as he personally feels the need to exercise himself as a role model for the people, he can inspire future generations to live a better tomorrow. It's an interesting dynamic how people who possess immeasurable powers can turn towards something "bigger than themselves" to reinforce a personal struggle with hope.
Having a scientific mind while believing in a divine creator, is anything but laziness. May I remind you that it is possible to be a thinker and a theist.
Sure, and a thinker would be more than inclined to secular ideas instead of stopping at one point of thought. That is a scientist.
Superhero Political Affiliations [NOTE: This could be its own thread if need be] The Dark King linked me to a site showing each character and their various religious affiliations, which is really good and quite an excellent find too. But I've always been wondering exactly what would their political affiliations be in the midst of it all. Now granted, it was emphasized that on the Justice League Unlimited in one episode, Superman was upset at Captain Marvel "endorsed" Lex Luthor for president and the reason being, aside from personal grudge, the Justice League doesn't get involved in politics. Now, that isn't to say that the individual superheroes don't get involved, and for some characters in both Marvel and DC universes, they all hold some brevity of political know-how and experience, so why not speculate on some of the characters and their political affiliations. As for the format? I'll conjure it up like this: Name of Superhero Political Affiliation/Ideology Explanation (This is optional) So on that note, here are my labels Superman Moderate Republican Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) Classical Conservative Captain America Truman Democrat Green Lantern (John Stewart) Moderate Democrat Spider-Man Left-Leaning Independent Hulk Lefty-Libertarian Green Arrow Left-leaning Democrat, possibly Green Party affiliated Wonder Woman Old World Socialist Flash Apolitical Iron Man Classic Conservative Republican/Possible Independent Professor Charles Xavier Liberal Democrat Captain Marvel Left-leaning Independent Captain Atom Conservative Republican Wolverine Independent Cyclops Liberal Republican (Rockefeller Republican) Beast Independent thinker Gambit Classical Lefty Batman Moderate Independent (Perhaps Republican leaning at one point) If you all have your own theories, feel free to post them. I think this will have its own thread in the near future. But let's see how well we often think about it.
The same applies. Yes, they are without a shadow of a doubt strong believers in the mystical, but they were able to challenge and separate from belief from fact. After all, Sir Isaac Newton challenged popular logic that the world was flat and even challenged some things which were deemed heretical and blasphemous via church. As for Francis Collins, he criticizes the Creationist and ID movements and label them as foolish and not in conjunction with science. Dawkins have debated him on some occasions, but they have profound respect for one another for this very reason. Despite that, he still remains a strong person of faith, but is able to separate his faith from scientific understanding.
