Police Shoot Dog in front of owner, Gunshots Caught On Graphic Video

A video of police shooting a dog to death in front of its owner has gone viral with millions of views after being posted to Reddit Monday afternoon.

The dog owner, Leon Rosby, was taking video of police officers in Hawthorne, Calif. as they barricaded a house, CBS reports. Rosby's attorney, Michael Gulden, said he plans to file a lawsuit against the Hawthorne Police Department.

Another bystander behind Rosby was recording him, and can be heard saying that Rosby asked the police why there weren't any black cops present. This drew the attention of two Hawthorne police officers, who started to approach Rosby.....

I am so heartbroken...We are NOT a police State country, it's insanity. Why did they arrest this man? He was within his Constitutional right to film and ask a question from a distance. They didn't need to shoot his beautiful dog!... </3

The minute that dog jumped out the car and attacked the police officers, that outcome was expected.

As for the guy, it is unfortunate that he got arrested, but wow...was he expecting a slap on the wrist knowing the officers were going to do this?

 

This was what I was talking about a long time ago about why there should be sound recording as well as the ability to place it on the internet. The police are against it but who watchs the watchman. You need these recordings both in video and voice. They are going to go easy on the police. This guy committed no crime. Freedom of speech is still a right. The problem is that there are no consequences for the police officers. The judge is going to dismiss the case and the guy has his time wasted but what punishment does the police officer get for falsely imprisoning him?

 

I thought I was prepared to watch this. I wasn't. Not only seeing the dog being shot but watching the owner's grief as he watched his pet being killed. *tears* I can't imagine how hard that was. Sometimes, I just despise people with power.

 

I got to admit as a guy who doesn't like dogs. I felt pretty bad for the dog. The guy did what he could do to protect the dog by putting him in the car but I kind of saw it coming. In court, it is going to be ow the dog was going to bite me and blah blah blah. He will win the case because it sort of came at him even though most dogs are more bark than bite. This one was no exception to the rule.

 

The cops could have let the owner secure the animal before they needed to take lethal action.

 

I had the same thought. That video just reduced me to tears.

 

The owner was fucking stupid for not making sure the windows were up more but he should have never been arrested in the first place and the cops had no reason to shoot that poor dog. I don't know if they care but keel turning the people against you but its better to remember the citizens out number them 1000 to 1the and they can get guns too.

 

Yes, he obviously was not resisting. This is totally disgusting. How you going to kill the mans dog??

 

I don't think he thought about that in the moment. (But the cops should have - they're trained to keep cool in tense situations.) But he did the right thing by trying to contain the dog in the vehicle because he obviously realized the cops were about to approach him. But when the dog jumped from the car, all they had to do was allow him to secure the dog. And yes, he should never have been cuffed, from what could be seen in the video. He appeared to simply ask them a question, wasn't really being rude or confrontational. My heart goes out to him having had to witness his dog being killed. I feel sick every time I think of that video.

 

The cops would have never done any of this secure business. If a dog comes at me, I'm taking action. I can't blame the cops for taking action. I can blame them for arresting the guy for freedom of speech that set forth all of this to happen. I just wished that the tax payers wouldn't have to pay for all of this. I already know he is going to be dismissed of charges but guess who has to pay for hiim to be in jail and for him to have the court date. hint: It isn't going to be the police department.

 

Sorry he was negligent too. The windows should have been up so he couldn't just jump out. It defeats the purpose of putting him in the car.

 

True that. I just don't think, in the moment, he remembered that the windows were down. From my recollection, it almost looked as if he put the dog in the car, preparing to leave, and then was called by one of the cops. Probably didn't think he'd be cuffed. But maybe I remember it wrong. Can't bear to watch it again...

 

Why was he arrested?

The obvious answer was to allow him to secure his own dog.
He can sue for more than just the death of his dog. What law did he break?

C'mon now.....the owner isn't Nostradamus...if you want to call somebody fucking stupid save it for the swine/cops...

 

What is sad is that the rottweiler is a protective breed,.. this dog was only trying to come to the aid of its master, which he saw being subdued by strangers....
I do agree,... Mr.Rosby should have been more thorough in taking his pet out of the scene by enclosing the windows higher.....But here we go again.....You can't stand around yelling shit and agitating police when they already have their guns drawn at a scene conducting an investigation.....What is particularly sad was that if he was not in hand-cuffs as a result of the arrest, he might have been able to restrain his pet and prevent the shooting.......those people wearing badges have the final say-so....Its one thing to peep in a little on the action, but then do the sensible thing !!...THINK of tomorrow for both you and your dog Mr.Rosby ...Hold him close and then take your ass home ............

 

Was he gonna drive off with the windows down? The dog could jump out at any time now.

 

He really didn't have time to start his car to put them up. He barely had time to get the dog in.

Anyway, there is more to this story....
He claims they came at him in retaliation b/c they recognized him from a previous incident for which he is already suing the Richmond PD. (for assaulting him in his home). His lawyer said one of the cops called him 'that troublemaker" and then they began their approach......

 

After reading all of the commentary thus far in this thread, I have decided I do not want to watch the video.
