Downton Abbey gets its first ever black character as Gary Carr is cast as jazz singer Jack Ross. It was revealed earlier this year that Downton Abbey producers were searching for the perfect person to play the show's first ever black character. And now it has been revealed that Death In Paradise actor Gary Carr will be joining the cast for the fourth series, as jazz singer Jack Ross. The 26-year-old actor will take on the role of the 'charming and charismatic' musician when the series returns to screens this autumn. Carnival Films’ Managing Director, Gareth Neame said of the casting: 'We are delighted to introduce another fantastic, dynamic character to Downton Abbey. 'His addition will bring interesting twists to the drama which we can’t wait for viewers to see in Series 4.' Gary's addition to the cast comes after Downton creator Julian Fellowes admitted he was keen to 'open the show up ethnically'.
I take it this is an English show. Nonetheless, fantastic news, always like to hear about more diversity.
First pics of Gary Carr with Lily James. Seems like it will be the usual interracial romance causes high society scandal storyline. Lily James in movie Fast Girls
I was thinking the same thing. I thought Downtown Abbey was during the period when Britain had the worst cast system on earth. If you were born a peasant, you died a peasant ... period. It didn't even matter what color you were. The reason many poor people died on the TITANIC in 1912 was because they were locked downstairs away from the upper class. When the TITANIC started sinking, no one had the keys to unlock the gates that separated the two classes.
RF,it reminds me of that flick too. I have that same feeling too but,I look forward to a love scene between them before the brother makes his exit. I saw Mr.Fellows on Tavis Smiley some weeks back along with the gorgeous Ms.McGovern. He said he will put a black character on the show. Also,on another publication he said he would have a cameo for Diddy after he saw him in that Funny or Die video.
Thanks for the pix Chamber. I hope there would be a book about Hutch in the future and more info of Blacks in upper crust UK. Another example was the relationship between Nancy Cunard and Henry Crowder.
I'm addicted to Downton Abbey, so much that I've found a way to get my season 4 fix. The character, Jack Ross, as portrayed by Gary Carr adds an interesting dynamic. Unfortunately, there can't be too many more episodes in season 4 - last night episode 6 aired in the UK & I'm dying to know what happened. I hope Jack & Rose (Lily James) do get a romance going. The character Rose is a real wild child, so anything's bound to happen. :smt077
