How does everyone feel about yesterdays decision on DOMA/Prop 8 going down? I am huge supporter for gay/women/minority equality so it made up a bit for the voting rights act going down.

However I know many, esp in the black community are not huge supporters of marriage equality...would love thoughts on this....

I'm very glad of the decision and on top of that, the Supreme Court striking down Prop 8 as well. Because of these decisions, it only shows that the Common Sense crowd has won the battle, but the war is far from over. The opposition didn't really have much of a leg to stand on either and it's pretty evident that they couldn't find a proper response.

When the judges weigh in, it seems like Justice Scalia is so fixated on anal plunging and boys...which tells me something about him....

How does that make up for the voting rights? I want all the rights not just swapping for others. The voting rights act was a biggie in comparison to this one that will barely affect any one. The only saving grace is that the federal government still has power to stop any illegal voting right activity.

I agree...great decision...well on wed it was...however they ruling left it more up to the states....even though I am sure that will be challenged soon.....here in Michigan we have an appeals judge to decide soon the outcome of what marriage means here...

Archangel...I am not saying that DOMA makes up for VRA....I am simply saying that at least BOTH did not go down...VRA was a tragic end to the pillar of the civil rights movement....as Congressman John Lewis said it was a dagger in the heart...however....a new civil rights fight has emerged and they won their first major battle....So as an American the voting rights act going down is going to an uphill battle from now on....but at least my gay brothers/sisters have equal standing with over 1000 federal rights

I think it is great! Finally!
It is discrimination to not give gay couples the same rights as hetero couples IMO.

Well we will see how they return that favor in the VRA.People generally care about what is important to them. It will be interesting to see if all those DOMA organisations are there to defend VGA.

Now the same rights courtesy should be extended to single people, also. Fair is fair is fair.

    what rights? marriage rights?

No. What this lawsuit was actually for, no? A RIGHT to the same federal tax exemptions extended to not just one section of Americans.

If it's a RIGHT TO... then why are single people denied? Please explain.

because it promotes marriages. You need to give people good reasons to marry.

    ok serious time.

You can have kids without marriage but you can't get those benefits unless you marry.

That's how I felt about your first answer. I mean, really.

It does help promote marriage. How does it not?

You don't get the benefits unless you get married.

please don't give me the oh we married because we love each other. This sweetens the deal of marriage. You don't need one reason to get married.

And why those benefits? For example, what does paying capital gains tax - or not - even have to do with marriage?

But thanks for proving my point. Again...the Supreme court just decided on a RIGHT to. Why are single people denied an indelible RIGHT of the land? You should be demanding it Arch. Fair for all.

problem 1: why not give it to everyone?
answer: because the government wants you to get married! Children tend to be better rounded coming from marriages.

If you are holding this naive look that everyone has the same rights.
    ha and ha ha

There are objects that outweigh fairness. In this particular case, the government needs the citizens to produce contributing people to our society.(aka people they can tax) Married couples tend to do that more often than non married ones(single or divorced). It is all about the money!

People don't marry for Tax exemptions. Sheet, marriage is not even a right under the Constitution.

Look up the reason why Government got involved in marriage. Betcha kids was in there and tax breaks wasn't. ;) (*ps too: we haven't always been separate from the Church.*)

And Love has nothing to do with it, spare the words in mouth.

Yet again, however.... yesterday's decision was NOT about reasons, but about a RIGHT TO...

I specifically stated that there isn't one reason to get married. There are many. It just helps me out when I am given a tax exemption for getting married! It gives me another reason to get married.

It matters less why they got invovled back then and why they are involved now. It is because of money.

WTH?? Your answer makes no sense now. You are all over the place AND backtracking. Now you're suddenly telling me the reason IS kids, yet when I suggested to you IT was, you made fun of my answer. You then said you don't need kids as a reason to get married, but now you say you do 'because it makes kids better rounded', AND "they become future tax contributors", so that is why the Govt gives you tax BREAKS on marriage..cause you know, "it's all about the money"?? :smt017 Dude...

Do me a favor, look up why the lawsuit was filed, then read the decision, then get back to me.
