Thanks! BTW, speaking of limited, I realized just now that can include funds as well, since I know it's tough ... which is why I think at least for now, the door jammer I mentioned might be a perfect start for you... I had one! They work! My (ex)husband who was strong as heck tested it for us and no way could he get the door to budge. Hot Deal $15.93 To purchase: http://www.smarthome.com/79916/Mace-80115-Big-Jammer-Door-Brace/p.aspx **This one too, while a way weaker jam, the piercing alarm will startle intruders and alert/wake you. Cost: $7.89 http://www.safetygirl.com/door-stop..._content=pla&gclid=COrmrY3MhLgCFQ6a4AodniAAyw
That is not going to stop someone from breaking a window. Where there is a will there is a way! self defense classes is probably a good idea.
It's just an added layer. Robbers don't want attention. Windows smashing attract attention. They run the risk of getting cut and leaving DNA. Walking through a door is less vulnerable to them than climbing through a busted window IMO. IDK, it's better than nothing and not an expensive layer. (ps: they have inexpensive portable window alarms, too)
My thing is if you have to really get all of this stuff. You should just move. It isn't worth any one's time living in an unsafe neighborhood. by unsafe, I mean high crime. I know every place is unsafe.
Did you happen to notice @ the start of the news story, the quiet suburban street the victim lived on? Millburn btw, is a sleepy town area. When I was robbed at (shot)gun point, the Detective told me the robber had come from the west side of town. And that's what they do Archie, they travel...they been robbed the people in their own areas who don't leave shit for them to take anymore.
I thought there was a string of robberies. I may have been wrong about that. I still count west side of town as in town. Chicago is probably bigger than your city. I wouldn't live there. too dangerous.
Yes Cher did say that, but sometime there comes a spike in crime. Like around here, no rapist story for years, then suddenly we had a string of break-in with rapes in my area (which the media only lead report once a pattern emerges ) Hard to just keep moving. Or money/rental prices dictates where you can live.
a string of robberies is enough for me not to live there. edit: You live in a dangerous neighborhood. I would move. I am so serious.
Live where, here of Chi town. Cause you couldn't pay my rent for me to live in Chicago right now, lol. That place scurrs me.
I live in a mixed-income, mixed-race, homes ranging from $50gs to 2mill area. It's a hodgepodge of life. Pockets of crime areas, others are beautiful. Beirut one street, Mayberry the next. *sigh* can't keep running. Effing crime pains my heart. Kudos to NY's mayor. Mine, and his revolving-prison-door policies can suck a d.
Bliss, thank you for the recommendation. I am definitely going to consider investing in a few deterrents, like the door jammer for instance, to make my little place a bit safer. I live on the 3rd floor, which is a plus...but it's not impossible for anyone really wanting to get in.
Nobody finds it odd that he has not been apprehended? His face is clearly shown in the video, police have photo recognition software, and if local police don't have it, the FBI can do it for them. And you all have heard the news about the Govt monitoring our cell phone and Internet usage. This dude must have a rap sheet as long as the Mississippi River. That's why I stated that this might have been a contract hit. This husband and his dept may be crooked, and if this dude is caught.....he can sing like a canary on what the police dept is doing.
Blackbull, contrary to your belief, we have had cop killers on the lam longer than him. I doubt the man is strolling around in Millburn. Exactly how is the NSA going to monitor this man's cell phone? Did he leave her his # to call him? What's his name? They can't even keep track of 2 Boston Bombers, even when Russia told us about them, twice. You keep calling her husband a cop - where do you get this from? From when he said he watched the footage w/ 7 officers in the room and 'we were all stunned'? Pretty sure it was either at the station where they played him the footage or when he arrived home. Your last paragraph is beyond ridiculous and makes no sense.
A lot of serial killers have home invasions in their criminal history. Sometimes they even steal sexual stuff, like panties etc. If this incident isn't "theater" or a set up of some kind, that guy is obviously crazy. You have to be crazy to invade and be immediately viciously violent like that. He's not your typical thief that's for sure.
You're right, I'd say it's an insult to a thief to name him a thief only. I could be wrong but it didn't look like theater to me, I think we all watch to many action movies, where women have to be hysterical, screaming or crying for us to realise they are being hurt. It actually seems quite normal to keep quiet after the initial shock, especially if you're thinking of a way to get out of it alive. If he's found he needs to be done for attempted murder as throwing her down the stairs qualifys for that IMO.
If it were up to me, home invasion alone should put him away until he's so old that he's completely harmless. People who cross that line are no ordinary criminals. They know they're putting themselves in a "kill or be killed" situation, and they go in anyway. They should be dealt with accordingly, even if they aren't violent.
I TOTALLY agree. That guy knew what he was doing. He knew she was alone in the first place. He wasn't that strong. None of his punches knocked her out or even made her groggy. He was intimidating to her because of his size and mannerism. A lot of times, even if you have a gun, situations come up on you so quick that you don't have time to get to your gun. The most vulnerable part of any human being is their eyes. I don't care how big or strong a person is, if you blind them, YOU will have the upper hand. Any aerosol spray, hair spray, air freshener, anything, you want to spray it in his eyes. Keep spraying, don't stop until the can is empty. Even when he goes to wipe his eyes, he will have so much on him he will make the situation worse. You can also "submarine" a much larger guy if you have to. If you've ever seen a smaller guy take on a much larger guy, he would get low and rush for his legs. He would grab one leg with both arms and pick it up off the ground. This would literally "take the legs out from under a guy" and he would fall on his back to the ground. Once on the ground, you wail on him unmercifully, you don't let him get back up. Self defense classes that are geared towards you being more cunning and using your wits are best for females. Most females are not going to over power a guy who is bigger and stronger than they are.
