after the mid 90's I divorced myself from rap. it was becoming trash. before that we had really artistic mofos and it was diverse. yes becak then we had white rappers like snow, 3rd bass, vanilla ice (well he is white), and the first the beastie boys. even weird al yankovich is nice on the mic.

rap was fun , thought provoking , ruff , and smooth.

    now everyone is a gangster.

well, i dipped in to listen what has been popping and you have the likes of yelawolf- gangster rap.

and macklemore and ryan lewis....these guys are hot. thrift shop is not the only hot joint they have. these mofos are lyrical, good beats and fun to liusten to.

so are the white guys taking it bacxk to where it belong and doing it better?

No. Actually...hell no. I'm a fairly hardcore 90s rap fan and the artists nowadays (white or black) don't come close to taking us back to those good ol' days. The guys you mentioned (yelawolf, macklemore) aren't my style, so IMO they're definitely not "doing it better". We're never going to get back to the style/quality rap we had at the height of 90s (NWA/Tupac/Dre/Bone/Biggie/Master P)...we've still got some rappers turning out decent tracks though, they're just fewer and farther between.

No. Rap has just become the latest music genre started by a minority group that white males have decided to co-op for themselves and has slowly but surely become acceptable as the new mainstream rebellious youth music for the last couple of generation of kids coming up. Especially white kids. That's why you now see the larger number of white rap artist now compared to the earlier days of rap. Some are garbage and some like Macklemore are legit hip hop heads. I've said this before in one of the music threads, Macklemore has been a mainstay in the Northwest hip hop underground for several years and has only within the last two years or so started to get mainstream recognition.

In the 80's, I remember Blondie(Deborah Harry) and her song Rapture. She helped bring rap to the mainstream. Weird Al Yankovic, Kid Rock and Marky Mark(Mark Wahlberg) and The Funky Bunch). When Vanilla Ice came out, he hit the ground running, beating MC Hammer. And then came Emimem. Eminem lived the rap and hip-hop lifestyle and participated in rap battles and competitions. I cannot say that whites are better rappers other than Eminem. Like everyone else, it is someone's time. Race, just becomes coincidental.

Hmmm... Mos Def and Taliban Kweli are white? No? Ok, then we still have the best artists. It's the difference between the osmonds and the Jackson 5. The osmonds were popular but they can't stand the test of time like the Jackson 5. Hip hop will always be ours no matter what. There are plenty of amazing rappers that are probably still making great music but can't make it to the mainstream. Heck the same goes for R&B, Eric Roberson couldn't cross over and Dwele could only get a McDonald's commercial but they are still amazing.

there's a pain that black people carry as a race that can't really be duplicated or articulated the way we as a race do it. I've been a fan and a student of hip hop since I was a young child and I've yet to see anyone have the social commentary that young black men have through rap. We may have lost our way for the most part but if you're looking for substance with incredible lyrical flow black rappers are the way to go for the most part. Eminem excluded of course.

You can hate all you want Mr New York, but Master P and Bone Thugs are classics. Maybe not the same level as NWA or Tupac, but no more than 1 notch down! You need a little west coast in your life...

Master P was the beginning of the decline of hip hop as far as lyrics. Downright sad. Bone Thugs had maybe three decent songs and that's it. Sorry West Coast step your game up homie

You are seriously smoking crack. There's no other explanation. Three decent songs?? I could rattle off probably 15 hit songs off the top of my head.

I'll give you Master P, just because I can appreciate that he's an acquired taste. You've lost your damn mind with your Bone comment though.

I never said they were a WC group. I've been listening to them since their first album dropped, I'm clear on where they come from. I listed them as part of what I consider 90s classic rap...then I commented about TDK calling me west coast.

In all fairness, there are 15 hit tracks on E. 1999 Eternal alone. I'm not sure if you're just not a Bone fan, or if you've just forgotten about all their successful tracks? Either way, youtube some of the names above and enjoy...compliments of the one and only W.C.

I remember the Beastie Boys and there some complaints. However,M.C.Search did a great job in pulling Ice down with the hit "Pop Goes the Weasel".

    E. 1999 Eternal was ridiculous! All those songs stay in constant rotation on my iPod, the ones in bold especially. "Cleveland is the city where we come from, so run run..."

I would go even further and add Handle the Vibe, Body Rott, Wasteland Warriors, Friends, Everyday Thang, and Shoot 'Em Up to that list too.
