Apparently she had a genetic marker identified that put her above 80% and 50% risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

My mom had breast cancer and there's a change in thinking among some oncologists about the need for preventive mastectomies.

Wonder how this affects her career??
She's so rich I'd imagine she's going to get the best custom made prosthetic breasts money can buy.

I just read that and I was like "this has to be a joke".
I didn't know she is carrying that particular gene.
I think I would have done the same in her position if someone told me my chance of getting cancer is 87%.
I think I would get some nice fake ones made in that case.

It seems like it would be hard to believe something you can't see on your on body happening. If you see a growth, your like, let's get this done. But just to be told that your at large risk, lets remove a large part of your womanhood even though there's nothing showing yet. Brave move.

My mother had a mastectomy. She had one breast removed and then the other about a year later. She had to endure chemotherapy. It literally drove her nuts with the pain and other discomforts. She is 75 and still alive. Thank God. Angie is strong. She knows what she must do to be there for Brad and the children.

Agreed. Breasts are replaceable, my life isn't. I would rather know in advance, and be proactive...than wait for a lump and go through the treatment to fight what's already occuring in my body. The sad thing is that her daughter(s?) probably will carry that same genetic trait. I appreciate celebrities coming out with these sort of stories because it shines a light on what SO many women pay no attention to. It's like pulling teeth to get women in for their mammos, and no matter how much we stress the importance of monthly breast checks...most women don't do them. It's sad.

I applaud Angelina for her brave choice and for putting cancer risk awareness out there, the only nitpick i have is that she should strive to be an example for all, at risk for cancer people, not just women.

Men centric cancers could really use this level of media attention. Men are far less likely to get checked out then women. I think if men oriented groups (sports leagues, beer companies, truck manufacturers, etc) Were to invest in as much time as women's groups do, we can save more fathers, sons, husbands and brothers.

Christina applegate went through the same thing. I don't think it will hurt her career

    kinda suspected this already

like i said tho..her having a double mastectomy can't be compared to average people who wouldnt be able to afford high-priced reconstructions

their quality of life would be different

    Hmmm.......

I don't know if anyone of you can answer this question (without google):

If you have a high risk to get breast cancer and you got the breasts removed, who says that the cancer doesn't pop up in your colon?
I know that each cell in your body has built in genetic information what part of the body it will become, but I'm still confused, how you can have a gene inside you that gives you a higher risk for getting cancer in a certain part of the body, not in general

a question for one of the docs here no doubt

in life ur fucked either way

no one lives forever and with so many different types of illnesses that can kill u, preventative measure only goes so far

I believe there are genetic markers for certain types of cancer.

At work we have a guy who has skin cancer.
It already came back twice after it was gone (with chemo).
The guy still drinks way too much coffee, gets drunk regularly and is a heavy smoker.
I asked him if he doesn't think it would be a good idea to quit smoking, or at least cut down to help your immune system get stronger.
He said that if you have one type of cancer, you can't get another one at the same time. So he can't get lung cancer, cause he already got skin cancer.
I don't know if his theory is correct, but I still thought that one could at least try to help the body to fight the cancer with a healthier lifestyle.
Guy is only 34......guess he feels that life is only worth living if he is doing it like he is used to, even if it is shorter.

    i think so

if my life is shortened and i knew the best days were behind me, id live it to the fullest

id travel more, or go out more, or drink more

even if u watch ur diet, there's only so much that will do for most people

a coworker who's approaching 60 keeps telling me that he wished he spent his life striving for happiness

he says that he tells his son it doesnt matter what he does or what he achieves, as long as he's happy on the inside

when u think about how short life is and how fast things could turn on u, he's right in a sense

be happy and enjoy life while you can

That's absolutely true. We spend a lot of time wondering what will be, once we achieved something we are striving for. We always want more, so we end up forgetting to enjoy the moment and enjoy what we already have.

Your co-worker is sorely misinformed. It's so incredibly sad to me how many people live their life oblivious to even a minimal amount of medical knowledge. Easy for me to say since healthcare is my profession, but even if it wasn't I honestly believe I'd make myself knowledgeable in things that concern my health.

People are certainly entitled to live their lives with blinders on if they so choose, but if that guy wants to reach 44, he's going to need to take better care of himself. Him smoking with a history of cancer kils me. I see people every day struggling with life altering diagnoses and to see some who seem so cavalier about it, bothers me. You get ONE life...it should be treated with a little more care IMO.
