Kobe Bryant, mom feud over N.J. auction

Lakers star trying to block planned June sale of memorabilia initiated by Pamela Bryant.

WEST BERLIN, N.J. -- A South Jersey sports-collectibles firm is at the center of a family fight between basketball star Kobe Bryant and his mother.

Goldin Auctions of West Berlin wants to sell more than 100 items from the Los Angeles Lakers' pro career and his days as a high school player in suburban Philadelphia. The keepsakes — including uniforms, rings and trophies — would be offered on consignment for Pamela Bryant, the athlete's mother.

But Kobe Bryant is trying to block the planned June auction, insisting he owns the memorabilia. The dispute moved to a federal court in Camden Thursday, when an attorney for the auction house requested a court order to allow the sale.

The filing noted Goldin Auctions already has paid a $450,000 advance to Pamela Bryant, who wanted to buy a new home in Nevada.

If a judge approves the sale, bidders could compete for shorts, jerseys, jackets and varsity letters that Bryant wore at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa. They could vie for NBA All-Star and Championship rings, a 1996 Gatorade National Player award and a 1992 Sonny Hill League Future Stars Champion Trophy.

The lineup also would include a team jersey from Bryant's childhood in Italy, which is described as "the earliest known Kobe Bryant game-worn jersey ever offered at auction." Bryant lived in Italy when his father, Joe, a former Philadelphia 76er, played professional basketball there.

Pamela Bryant contends the collectibles have been in her possession for at least 15 years, a court filing
says. It adds she stored the items in West Berlin over the past five years at a cost of $1,500 per month.

According to the filing, Pamela Bryant "indicated her son gave these items to her, stating 'Here Mom, these are for you.' "

The athlete's attorney sees it differently.

"Mr. Bryant's personal property has ended up in the possession of someone who does not lawfully own it," asserted Mark Campbell of Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles.

Goldin's attorney, Jeffrey Cohen of Cherry Hill, N.J., could not be reached.
According to the lawsuit, Kobe Bryant's attorneys contacted Goldin Auctions Tuesday, the same day the planned auction was announced. Their cease-and-desist letter insisted the auction be canceled and the items returned to the player.
In seeking an injunction against Kobe Bryant, Goldin's attorney cited the potential loss of the advance payment to Bryant's mother, as well as the loss of a 20 percent commission on auction sales. The filing also noted Pamela Bryant still has some 900 items from her son's career with an estimated value of $1.5 million.

U.S. District Judge Renee Bumb set no date for a decision on the auction firm's request

    TMZ says
    http://www.tmz.com/2013/05/04/kobe-...-over-money-feud-million-dollar-house-lakers/

We now know why Kobe Bryant is at war with his mother ... at least from his perspective, and it has to do with money.

As we previously reported ... Kobe and mama Pamela Bryant are locked in a battle over memorabilia ... his old jerseys, varsity letters from high school, championship rings, trophies and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Pamela has taken all the stuff to an auction house, claiming he gave it all to her, and she got a $450,000 advance which she says she's using to buy a house in Nevada. Kobe contacted the auction house and said they had no right to sell any of the items because they belong to him.

Sources connected with the Bryant family tell TMZ ... the dispute between mother and son erupted over real estate. We're told Kobe offered to buy his parents a "nice house" in Vegas for significantly less than a million bucks, but they wanted something bigger and more extravagant and Kobe drew a line in the sand and refused to up the ante.

Our sources say Pamela was infuriated and believed Kobe was shortchanging them, especially compared to what he does for Vanessa's mom, Sofia Laine. Kobe put Sofia up in a $3.2 million house in Newport Beach, CA, which sold recently. After the sale, Kobe moved Sofia to another multi-million dollar mansion nearby.

From Kobe's perspective, our sources say he's really upset because he believes he's stepped up for years, by giving his parents millions of dollars and buying them homes and cars.

This feud has been brewing for years ... dating back to when Kobe's parents went ballistic when he married Vanessa without a prenup.

There's nothing worse than moeny hungry family, especially your direct fam. This is why your money is private to every one (anyone that's not directly involved in earning your money).

You think it's cool for your family to know details about all the millions you make, nope. I wouldn't even tell my parents about my assets in detail. I'd a most, give them a ballpark, but no details. You give people an inch, and they always go to take a mile:smt099

Take care of your mother, Kobe. She's the only one you have. She wiped your ass and snot and you treat your wife's mother better? Um no.

And over belongings you haven't bothered with for over 15 years? C'mon son.

in the TMZ part it stated this

"Sources connected with the Bryant family tell TMZ ... the dispute between mother and son erupted over real estate. Yes, I know, read the articles. That's why I said the Vanessa mom's part....

"Our sources say Pamela was infuriated and believed Kobe was shortchanging them, especially compared to what he does for Vanessa's mom, Sofia Laine. Kobe put Sofia up in a $3.2 million house in Newport Beach, CA, which sold recently. After the sale, Kobe moved Sofia to another multi-million dollar mansion nearby."

Selling his forgotten belongings is the tipping point. He's being a real bitch to his mom, sorry.
Take care of your moms, always.

Well, I see this a few different ways.

First: if Kobe did give his mother those items as a gift, its within her right to sell them. Is it right? Probably not. But it is what it is.

Second: He obviously hasn't taken care of his mother the way she feels he should have, but that's merely speculation on my part.

Third: it's been 15 years. If he wanted those things, he should have been paying for storage and managing them himself. hr wouldn't be on this predicament now.

Money is the root of all things evil. Very sad that he is allowing money and all of his success stand on the way of what truly matters most. Family. and and she seems hungry...

i get what you are saying....im not disputing that.
His dad was at one time a probasketball player too if im accurate. how much he made i dont know. he played over seas if im not mistaken.

i think his exwife's family is well off too. i believe the father is a doctor...not sure. anyway.....it seems that kobe maybe getting fed up with the family sponging his ass.

i was watching a documentary by espn called something like bankrupt and one of the reasons dudes (athletes) go broke is because of family and friends.

Im wondering why the mom need to sell his shit. that is something fould about that.

to me both coming off not looking good.

kobe has a history for some bitch ass moves

i pretty much agree with everything except the bold part. It SEEMS she is letting things stand in the way of the relationship (IF TRUE ABOUT THE HOUSE). Im just speculating here but he MAY have already bought her a nice house and then he decided to buy another BUT she wants it bigger. now it is his money and beggers shouldnt be choosers. i canb understand if he was trying to put her in crack house or something but you know shit..LOL i dont think thats the case. LOL

    definitely speculation on my part.

Dont like the way everyone thinks they have a say so in spending money that they didn't earn or isn't theirs to begin with.

Something is strange about this story, with the mother wanting to sell all of his things. Hopefully they can work it out.

Money, Money, Money, it never fucking fails to bring out the worst in folks.

Enough is never enough for the greedy.

Didn't Kobe offer her some change for a new crib and yet she wanted more, gimme more, gimme, more, it wasn't enough. SMH.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covert_incest

The idea that a son must care for his mother to the point of being her provider is covert incest and a large problem within the black community. It is her duty to provide for herself and she has a husband he is also her provider. So what if she cleaned his snot and wiped his bum as a baby? THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO... YOU DECIDED TO HAVE A CHILD YOU ARE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CHILD. He has already purchased homes, cars, and I am sure plenty of other gifts. He is not her provider, he is not her husband. He has already gone above and beyond for showing appreciation and he is justifiably upset over what his mother is pulling. He is her son, not her husband. The idea that he must keep dishing out his fortune because she decided against aborting him ages ago doesn't mean she is entitled to whatever she wants. Pushing him to be the provider for everything she wants puts him in a position of emotional (or covert) Incest, and I'll be damned if I haven't seen that tear black communities apart for quite some time.

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
    Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

She has a husband who can provide. His name is Joe Bryant. He has played for the 76ers and has coached WNBA teams. If she is going after her son to provide then she is ultimately putting her son in her father's position. This is covert incest. Furthermore, I find it rather repulsive that parents feel that their children owe them something because they decided to give birth instead of abort. It's ridiculous. I am all for helping out the family, but unless your family members are also your financial advisers, they are in no position to tell you how much you should spend.
