For any teenager, prom is a monumental night, but for students at a Georgia high school, it has been more than 40 years in the making.

For the first time ever, students at Wilcox County High School, in Rochelle, Ga. danced together at a prom that wasn't segregated.

For decades, the school board has avoided officially endorsing prom festivities, instead relying on parents to host and control invitations leading to year after year of two dances - one for white students, and one for the black students.

Students have lobbied over the years to end the practice. This year, a group of Wilcox County seniors decided to take matters into their own hands.

The four girls, two black and two white, created a Facebook page asking for support and donations to fund an independent bash open to all.

"We were doing that so we could get the word out, so that some people would be able to donate and help us out with what we were doing," said senior Mareshia Rucker.

you should have seen the interviews prior to the prom. they were interviewing people and they were saying that it is wrong for blacks and whites should not have the prom together because of tradition and yada yada. it was young and old saying it too

    The comments are terrible.

I've never been exposed irl to the level of ignorance that some of those commentators showed. Stares, smart remarks, random judgement from old people...sure, but nothing like what I read in some of the comments. The way they spoke about IR dating/marriage and biracial children makes me nauseous. It's incredibly sad to know that's the reality in America. It may not be the reality I'm used to, or the reality in my city...but it's the reality for some people, and that's sickening. What irks me is that while I'm raising my kids to love and respect everyone, these sick bastards are teaching their kids the exact opposite. :smt011 It's quite infuriating.

i give props to people raising kids from IR relationships. it really says a lot about your character when you willingly go down that road, knowing that you had the choice of creating white kids or mixed ones. same goes for whites who adopt black kids. there's so much hostility towards people of color and as a mom, you're going to be exposed to it sooner or later.

only thing you can do is what my mom did for me, which was be strong for her child when the real-life racism was harsh. she always had my back and taught me to keep pushing forward regardless of how much hate i endured.

like you said, while you're teaching ur kids one thing, other parents are literally teaching their kids to hate for no damn good reason

You better believe it. I'm a very strong individual, and when it comes to my kids...it's that much more pronounced! My kids are 8 and 5 (next month), and we have frequent and open dialogue about respect, independance, courage, perseverance and the bottom line fact that I'll always be in their corner. Kids need to be able to dream big and reach for the stars...knowing that if they should slip and fall, they've got people in their corner who are going to encourage them to get up and try again. If/when someone makes my child feel less than because of their race...shit's going down! This momma doesn't mess around when it comes to her babies.

The people who want segregated proms can still have their segregated proms, I guess. Nothing stopping them. If there were two proms before, why not 3 - black, white, & mixed?

What's fucked up is that they want segregated proms, but don't want anyone else to have a mixed prom....

    That's the anti-mixing mindset in a nutshell.

My question is: is this school just black and white? Where are the latinos and asians?
