Black People Are Easily Offended?

Excuse me if this subject has been talked about in the past, but I've been thinking about this one recently.

I often hear "other" people say black people are defensive or black people can't take a joke. I can agree with this stereotype and all, but I think we black people are pretty justified for getting defensive when being "put down" even if in a joking matter.

I don't know, give me your 2 cents.

I play poker on facebook and believe me if anyone takes a joke the wrong way on there, it's usually a black guy and usually they are american.

Actually I shouldn't say usually, the only times I've had jokes taken the wrong way it's always black guys and they are always american.

Plz b4 anyone says anything, they were not racially motivated jokes.
And also most times im chatting with buddies and its not even directed to them.

Sorry to any American black guys reading this who have a genuine sense of humour and don't get their knickers in a bunch when you're just jesting em.

Hundreds of years of institutionalized slavery and a hundred years more of bigotry, all the while still being portrayed as subhuman or less desirable would make you sensitive.

But not all Black Americans are like that.

I know some BM who are very laid back and don't get offended easily - about anything. I shared this story before (I think) about one of my friends who was in the Navy and worked in health care. One day, he walked into the hospital room of a very cantankerous elderly white man who, upon seeing my friend yelled, "What's that (n word) doing in my room?" My friend yelled "Where?!" and started looking under the bed, in the closet, out the door... It was funny to hear him tell it, and one of the things I really like about him is that he takes that kind of thing in stride and with good humor. I'm not sure I could, were I in his shoes, but I'm glad he can.

Agreed, I would rep you but I don't have nay rep power so I don't think it would change anything lol

But I do have to argue this; Do you (or anybody else reading) think we as black people can let go of the past and let bygones be bygones? I'm not saying we should ignore and cover up black history in America... but is it really smart to let our history affect us so negatively in the present and future? It seems almost counterproductive.

That's funny you say that because you are one of the most easily offended people around these parts.

I think it will take generations. Racism, prejudice is taught/learned, sometimes subconsciously.

    I'm offended by this

    Just kidding.

As an Afro-caribbean man living in the US, I'd say that this is a true statement by and large; but there's so many layers of stuff that created this and continues it, that I'd be typing all day if I tried to get into it...lol. But a lot of it has to do with history and what's been past down through the generations.

It's enough to teach a part I and II college level course.

The thing is, when it's still happening, it's almost impossible to "let go of the past and let bygones be bygones."

Take for example, the Stop and Frisk law in NYC. The main objective of this law or technique rather is to find drugs and weapons. But mostly drugs. In a city where less than 20% of people are black and Hispanic and the majority of the drugs used in the city are by white people, how is it that 90% of the people that are arrested are black and Hispanic?

This is also NOT a dog on white people, I'm merely pointing out some institutionalized racism that is still alive to this day.

    Not really.

I think it seems that way because a lot of Black people feign offense or anger in public. This PC/pretend multiculturalism also creates a new sorta paranoia about who is really racist.

I wish more could take whatever real anger or pain and channel it into righteous indignation.

The poor ones are usually unable to articulate their pain, they turn to self-medication, lash out at other black people, and make all kinds a noise because they want to be seen.

The educated/middle to upper class ones rankle about not getting a cab, being followed in the store or not getting that promotion or corner office because the unqualified white automaton got it. That is some real shit no doubt, but please don't compare that to slavery or being lynched! Have you forgotten that you live in a racist country?

There is real shit like the prison industrial complex to get upset over. Ending Stop and Frisk like Empire mentioned is something to line up behind, having a mock burial of the n-word or making sure Tom Joyner stays on the radio, um, not so much.
