Teacher Fired Over Giving Student The Bible My Take I personally don't any real reason for the teacher's firing. The job of a teacher is to educate the students, which he has done. The inquisitive student asked where did he get the quote from and Mr. Tutka replied with honesty. And naturally, as an educator, he gave the student something for him to read. Perhaps the student accepted and took a look into reading it. There's no offense in it whatsoever. But that being said, it was a bit on the slippery slope since he was teaching at a public institution and by making religious references in the classroom continuously, you could say that he's injecting religion into the classroom. But is he doing it with an agenda? Absolutely not. But he should have been careful when teaching under such methods. Rather, he could teach at a Christian private institution to prevent himself to face such scrutiny.
i saw that story myself and I was conflicted too. Im sure the conservative will jump all over this and rightfully so.....here is another point....he is using the civil rights act of 1964.......hhhmmm coming from the blacks who marched for his ability to sue
I think he's overreaching his argument, claiming discrimination and all. Yes, it was foolish for the school to fire him for giving a student the Bible, but he had to be careful since it's a public school. When I took a class for a Geography course at my university, the teacher was heavily religious and always cited Biblical quotes here and there. Then again, this is an online course and only posted it on the syllabus. I didn't see a problem with it, despite being in a public university.
i dont know if he is over reaching but he should have used common sense. its best to stay away from religion and politics on dates and in the work place and even in public areas (depending on the situation)
That is true. It disrupts the atmosphere, but you know? It's hard to do to be honest when it's so deeply rooted in our psyche.
Where does it say he did that??? This is another instance of taking things too far, like people hollering "sexual harassment" because someone told them they looked nice. There is either more to this story or it's just reaching. The teacher did nothing wrong. Now, if he had quoted a line from the Kama Sutra and gave the student a copy of that....well, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.
The substitute teacher gave one student one bible. He didn't give every student a bible. His firing for that is ridiculous. However, some folks want to be identified as Christians and will wear it like a badge of honor. Religious beliefs are to be respected. But, I would be concerned if he is one of those folks who wants to put God in public schools.
It doesn't say...but it could be implied that he would make usage of it. But I do agree that he did nothing wrong. However, I would say that he should be careful when doing things like that, especially when he's teaching at a public institution. And for the record, the Kama Sutra isn't a holy book, if that's what you're thinking.
Agreed. But in this case, he's simply doing his duty as an educator. And it doesn't require a curriculum to ensure that you're an educator anyway.
Um, no, I'm not thinking the Kama Sutra is a holy book. What it is, is an inappropriate book for a student under 18, and would warrant the firing of a teacher, imo
I was taught sex ed in my high school when I was a Freshman, by my religion teacher and she was quite good at what she did. And us students were quite pleased with what we've learned. So come on, Lady T...no need to get all tensed by the power of education.
On the surface his firing sounds reactionary and harsh. But if he'd been warned and reprimanded more than once by his superiors NOT to inject his own personal religious dogma into his lessons, and dumbfuck did it anyway, then he deserves to be fired for being an idiot.
