Brazil did have slavery in their history. Granted historians will say not as brutal as slavery was in North America. The problem with people of african ancestry in the Americas is the same forces that has pitted us against each other in this country "divide and conquer" by the ruling elites (liberal and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans) and has also been very successful throughout the Americas to prevent another similar "Civil Rights Movement" from springing up in their countries. Historically, what scared the shit out of most latin elites in countries with large black populations and the slave rulers of the American South at the time was what happened in Haiti when the French had to deal with rebellious blacks this set the tone in fearing the blacks. Read your history. Something many of us do not or will not do.

A friend of mine from Sao Paulo told me earlier this morning about Brazil and let me say that it was not a glowing review. Besides the beach and the upcoming olympic games, Brazil is not a very happy place to be if you don't have the money or social connections. But that rule applies everywhere in the world.

Hawaii is a good place to be. However, there is some racism there, too, but it is aimed mostly at whites who want to ruin the islands with their money. The island of Maui has a black population on it. Though the Hawaiian Islands are in the US, they are not the US. They are Hawaiian. Getting a job is tough unless you are the military or medical fields. You just have to get used to volcanoes, typhoons, tsunamis and earthquakes. The city of Hilo, on the Big Island gets more rain than anywhere on the island.

DOn't know about Canada, but France is in the middle of a lengthy recession. It's not exactly overflowing with high paying jobs at the moment.

We still have a middle class in this country, the largest in the world. THe problem is our middle class is slowly being defined downward.

What represented the middle class 30 years ago doesn't really exist in the same form today.
I'm still not ready to call the current middle class in America the new working poor, because they aren't. But they are converging closer together.

Anyway I'm not talking about which countries are better economically to be living in as BM. I meant culturally and socially.

If it's down to Canada, France and the UK as the top contenders, I'd rather be here.

Good for you but certain things are evident like for instance racial tension. The US has to be the most racist place towards blacks in the industrial world
