It is interesting when it comes to the martial way, that everyone wants to learn how to prevail, while they sometimes have the desire to be a bully. Being a Black Belt(equivalent or higher in some styles), to me, is not about the prize. The journey is what matters to me the most. The learning does not stop at Black Belt or higher. At the dojang I studied in, our instructor teaches all of us, that despite the skills and levels, were are taught, respect for life is important.

I wish I had you as a student. I like your thinking. The martial arts is a journey in personal discovery and growth in the self. Mind, body and spirit are the three pillars of life that we humans must endlessly develop for perfection.

I wish I had the time and money to continue. I am not as strong and fast as I used to be. When I can get a job and find the martial art that works for me, I will start over. I am looking at krav maga and Bruce Lee's jeet kune do. I had always learned to appreciate the journey, be it in martial arts or anything else. Because it is the journey that matters.

Don't need to be strong or fast in jiu jitsu

Any good coach will tell you as you gain more experience, you actually slow down and rely on technique and timing

Thanks . I had learned a similar lesson when I first took up tai chi. My instructors always told me to relax because I was always rigid from studying tae kwon do. I couldn't help it. As Master Bruce Lee says, "Become like water." l will try again next time.

mind u ed o neil was like 60 or some shit when he received his black belt

speed and strength is good when you are new, because you dont have that fluidity with your training yet

as you train, your mind really adapts and find more holes and weaknesses to exploit. exerting energy is something that you don't do, unless you have to.

best comparison i can make is to a snake, slowly incapacitating their victims

James Caan(Sonny Coreleone from The Godfather) also trains in the martial arts. I think he got into it when he was in the Sam Peckinpah film The Killer Elite. Frank Sinatra did karate in the film The Manchurian Candidate. He broke his finger during the fight scene with Henry Silva. Spencer Tracy beating Ernest Borgnine with one arm in the film Bad Day At Black Rock was also a classic. The Flint movies with James Coburn(he was on of Bruce Lee's students). You'd be very surprised as to who really did martial arts in films. But at least they were committed. And let us not forget Robert Downey, Jr. He had been studying wing chun kung fu for over 20 years. It helped him immensely.

Finding a martial art that works for an individual is a process. As Bruce Lee said in the film Return Of The Dragon when asked about what martial art is better, he says, "Whatever works." He didn't say that his style was better than others, just that if a style works for you, stick with it. A Chinese woman once told me to keep practicing tai chi because it is also great for energizing your sexual energy. David Carridine practiced it and it worked for him along with kung fu.

My friend. Unfortunately my wife decided not to take part in the upcoming tournament. The demands of her job since her promotion is taking a toll on her time. The priority for her is the family and her occupation. I support her. Perhaps another time will be possible.

    Yup

Many of us have obligations that prevent us from really supporting things
