The Dark Knight posted a story up earlier that got me thinking about the death penalty, because of the comment made in the story.

Through a light search, it doesn't seem like this topic has come up directly in thread form.

I know some us come here to let steam out and don't want to hear about these types of topics, so steer clear if that's you, I know from experience this particular topic can become heated (as many of you probably already know yourselves). I'm just interested and seeing where some of my forum family lies on this topic.

Feel free to take the topic in different directions, we all know religion will come up, I want to hear everything, hopefully I read something that I haven't thought about, or don't know. I have understanding about the laws that surround the death penalty.

I know people get punished by a grouped of their peers, and they may give them the punishment of death. I have generally understanding. With this in mind, my opinion as it stands now, depends on my mood really. But usually, it some atrocious crime connected with the death penalty cases, and I usually say, put em' down. But my opinion is laced with morals, values and characteristics that were instilled in me. Experiences and situations I have lived through have shaped my view as well. As I write, and think, it seem this decision is somewhat personal, let me know what you guys think and know about the death penalty.

I'm against the whole notion of the death penalty, not so much of the killing aspect, but the idea that it's too expensive to keep active in modern society, plus I hate the idea of seeing an innocent person put on death row. I do firmly believe that there are people out there who does not deserve to live, especially since second chances don't always guarantee a better person.

As for the financial reasons, it's much more expensive to put a person to death, using taxpayer's money as opposed to keeping them alive.

I could speak more, but I'll just remain direct and to the point on this matter.

IS it really more expensive to keep a person alive oppsed to the death proceedure? This is surprising to me. Do you know why this is? What some of the cost involve?

When you factor in a long, judicial process, along with paying the judges, bailiffs, lawyers, and more so, paying for the expensive chemicals, all through the taxpayer's money...it's much more expensive.

I can't comment on the financial side of it, so this is just my personal opinion.

I'm against the death penalty because even one innocent person put to death is too many. I just can't get my head around that. The fact that mistakes can be made just gives me a bad feeling about the death penalty.

On the other hand. I do believe that some crimes (child abuse, for example) are only punishable by death. Not just because they are so severe, but because there is something fundamentally wrong with the person who commited that crime. Their brain is just hard-wired the wrong way and they will always ALWAYS commit that crime again and again.

I'm a little conflicted about it sometimes. :smt042

I was raised to believe killing is only justified if the one doing the killing is in mortal danger, and they have to take a life to save a life.

Also, the death penalty is permanent, and our world is too imperfect to use a permanent punishment that cannot be corrected once it is administered.

As it stands now I am completely against the death penalty because its unevenly dispensed. Too many black men being executed for the same exact crime that whites commit.

Race aside, how do you feel?

Its hard for me to separate the racial side of it since the punishment is unevenly applied but in a hypothetical world where we are all the same ethnicity and race I'd say I was still against it since like Thump said this world is too imperfect to apply such a permanent solution.
I'm in favor of exile there are shit ton of uninhabited islands in the world. Let all the mass murders, rapists, child molestors, and bankers duke it out on an island with no way off. It would save a lot of money in tax payer money and its far more humane than just putting them to death. They can live on farming colonies where they can work the land for their survival.

You my friend have never had to work on a farm have you?
My grandmother had a goat farm in Jamaica and just going to the well for water was a fucking work out. Unless you have a industrial farming equipment its incredibly labor intensive.

When I was a junior in high school, I thought at the time that the death penalty was immoral because there was a higher justice than the laws of man. I have become indifferent to it because this is an issue I have no definite answer or argument. It is expensive to care for a death row inmate. They get regular doctor, lawyer and clergy(his/her own, or the clergy provided by the institution)visits. They can eat whatever they like. Visits from family(the state sometimes puts up family that lives out of town or state in a hotel). It all adds up. A life of crime, everybody pays a price.

I have helped out before, but I've never worked on a farm extensively, no. I have never spent any real time incarcerated either, but imagine that being able to be out and have a purpose beats the alternatives, especially on a tropical island.

lol again do it for a whole summer and get back to me. And to be honest whats wrong with them having purpose? I never saw anything wrong with giving them something to do maybe it would cut down on the violence

Sounds like earlier days of America and Australia all over again. If someone is a child molester or serial killer just complete a high voltage circuit using their asses and call it a day. Sure it will hurt them but not for long.

From an initial viewing of MS's slink and from what he says. generally the cost is coming from the multiple trials and representation. Let's say that money is not factor (I know, I know), how do you decide, what do you decide?

Do you think you would be persuaded if made to watch an execution--especially by electrocution.
