Something positive in the news (for a change). Anyone else read this? I thought of TDK when I read it. The Root) -- What does the line "There are more black men in jail than in college" have in common with the Jheri curl? Answer: They were invented by white men (Jheri Redding and Vincent Schiraldi, respectively) and adopted enthusiastically by black people, and they left a nasty stain on the shoulders of millions of black men. It's been more than 20 years since the Jheri curl faded away into infamy, and I'm proud to say that even in the 1980s, I never sported a curl. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the line "There are more black men in jail than in college." Read the full story here: http://www.theroot.com/views/more-black-men-jail-college-wrong
Cue Iggy/Harrow to come through and declare this as nothing but bullshit propaganda created by the NAACP & guilty white liberals because we all know that black on black crime is such a HUGE problem & that black people are the most ignorant and uneducated racial group in society..........
Yeah, this made me think of Iggy too, but I've learned I can choose what thoughts to entertain and what thoughts to refuse and I decided to refuse that thought.
Never doubt the power of propaganda. Racisim used to be enforced with laws, but now they use agenda driven lies disguised as "facts". Honestly, I question every statistic these days.
Ironically too, I heard a stat yesterday that incarceration overall for Black men is trending way down. Same for Black women. What has risen drastically is incarceration for White women and White men. They said something about changing drug laws, which bodes to the widely-held belief that a huge reason Black male incarceration skyrocketed was because of then new (unfair/biased?) drug offense laws that just deluged the system. But of course it's still a stat, however it's one I hope reflects the truth. (@ the bolded part - not that I like the rise in WW & WM rate. It would be great if there was an overall decrease, period, tbh.) I had also read in the past on a myth-buster site that this was an untrue 'fact'. :smt023
When I was a corrections officer working in Florida State Prison back in 1993, I had seen a lot of young black males in prison. But I had seen a lot of young white males there, too. I saw a few latino/hispanic males and at least one asian male. It was difficult to determine "the numbers." Which is why most of the officers focused on providing the three main components to this job; care, custody and control. If we could go and research it further(like reading an inmate's file), there would be a risk of being prejudiced toward inmates. Facts, data, findings and other research to support someone's argument is nothing but hot air. If they want the real facts, why don't they go to prison?
