Danica Patrick - First woman to win the pole position

    My Take

One of the most prolific and beautiful women in the world today has achieved greatness and has broken more barriers than you'd imagine. Role models have a way of appearance in great forms -- and Lady Patrick is no exception. With a field dominated by rugged masculinity, this ferocious female has demonstrated she can rival even the best. No performance enhanced drugs used in this young woman...for she is a role model for a younger generation, especially the girls who aspires to become race car drivers.

She isn't a role model I would want my daughter to follow. She is primarily popular because she is hot. She has used her sex appeal to hide the fact that she is at best, a mediocre driver.

I would want my daughter to emulate women like the Williams sisters. Women who have actually achieved greatness with their talent and not with their sex appeal.

Oh, forgot to say that I do hope the best for her. It's always good to see someone achieve something on their own merits.

Congratulations to Danica Patrick. The second woman to break the male-dominated field of race car driving since Shirley Muldowney(see the film Heart Like A Wheel with Bonnie Bedelia). Patrick also pitched GoDaddy.com. She has just begun. She had once expressed an interest in driving in the Formula One circuit. I wish her much continued success.

    Thump,
Your assessment is a bit harsh,...she has been a work in progress......Give her credit for developing enough driving skill to beat out the rest of those veteran men in this pole positioning run.....If she was only a pretty face and not a bona fide racer, her sponsorship and financial backing would have dried up long time ago.........I say she will finish in the top 3 of the upcoming Daytona Beach 500.......

My main statement was a response to Majestic Saint's statement.

However, My criticism comes from the fact that her achievements don't match her fame and celebrity. I think it is a disservice to her and to future young women drivers, to not hold them to a equal standard as their male counterparts.

But I do wish her the best.

Anna Kournikova is a perfect example of what's in bold. Though not a race car driver like Patrick, she actually used her sex appeal to gain some level attention, despite the fact that she's a mediocre tennis player.

As for Patrick, she actually broke a major hurdle in the sport and though there was, if memory serves correctly, another major female NASCAR driver who have ran with the male-dominated field and out bested them in many occasions. As Archman said, you're far too harsh on this particular person especially when she actually broke some barriers for females to enter the NASCAR field.

I seriously don't see how she is considered mediocre when she's one of the fastest people on the race car circuit. That's like calling the Williams sisters mediocre because they come off as a strict powerhouses and lacking agility.

I'm not here to bash Danica Patrick, I love the idea of women breaking barriers. But the fact is, she has been racing professionally for at least 8 years and she has won only once. Yet she is one of the most famous race car drivers in the world.

In my book merit trumps everything, I could care less about race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality. If you are good you deserve praise. If your praise out weighs your achievements then you are at best, over hyped or at worst a fraud.

Although I think she is talented and has potential.

Hopefully she won't run into any problems that will make her start at the rear of the field. She did win pole in last years NNS race, so I think she'll do well.

you are right to a point. her fame is due to her beauty but the fact is ...it brings more attention to that crap of a sport called racing.yes it has a following and it had a following before her but I wouldnt know half the people I know in racing if it wasnt for her...errrr espn.

hell a lot of people stop flipping away from espn because she make people stop for a sec before they change the channel.

The last 5 minutes of that race were some of the most exciting sports drama I've ever seen. When Danica was among the top 3 to five racers on the final laps, it was like watching the Masters on the last day with Woods in contention with five holes to go.

When Danica is close to winning, IMO she brings juice to a sport that makes (very)casual race car fans like myself stop flipping channels and watch how things are going to turn out.

Winning the pole and finishing in the top 10 is a major accomplishment in what I think is only Danica's 2nd Daytona 500.

I wanted to bend her over and ride today!!

I have got to say this. I have been invited to a few NASCAR races by on of my white friends and I have never been more uncomfortable in my life. Not even getting caught chokin it by my mother when I was a kid was as awkward as being the only black dude within 1000 feet in any direction in the grand stands and this is in California. People were walking RIGHT into me and my friend. RIGHT INTO US. Going to the bathroom to piss off the beer and every time same shit. No one would even acknowledge my existence and give even a little space to move about. You try to make eye contact and smile at people and they just look at you blankly or they mean mug you.One guy who was getting up to take a leak decided to use my head as a support to balance himself and although I could have got violent I decided not to because 1) I was a guest and didst want to make a big scene and 2) We were severely outnumbered so I let it slide. No one was going to take my side anyways. At the races they have these huge merchandise trucks where they sell fan apparel and collectible items, jackets and assorted souvenirs. There are trucks for all the big drivers and there are enough to form a kind of city so before and after the race, the fans are all milling about eating, drinking and buying shit or waiting in line to buy shit. People were walking into us and poking me with their elbow after a while of this I began to realize that this was some passive aggressive get off our lawn type shit. I saw people with confederate flags waving EVERYWHERE. I felt like I walked into a Klan meeting. I have been to three races and I will never go back. The racing itself can be fun and the drivers are accessible which is good for the fans but the fan base is redneck and racist as fuck and they do not want us there. Until they fix their culture problem I say FUCK NASCAR.

Damn. Just reading this is stressful. I always kinda knew NASCAR was a redneck sport, but fuck that!! I wonder if it's a similar vibe for Black folk who attend NHL games??

That's crazy fam. I went to a country concert expecting the same thing. I was the only black guy there outside of the security and didn't have any problems, but to fair i don't think that same demographic of intolerant assholes frequent Rascal Flatts concerts even though they had that same damn confederate flag waving bs on stage. People kept to themselves and I was there with a white chick too which looking back probably wasn't the best idea. Its sad when people can't just enjoy themselves without the bs.

Well since there are some good black hockey players in the NHL I would imagine it might be different and the hockey fans tend to be northerners (due to the climate it takes to play hockey outdoors)as opposed to redneck with southern roots it might be a nicer story. NASCAR is about as white bread as sport gets in this country.

Props to you for making the bold move. I would have not have been able to do that in the past but maybe since you broke some new ground and it was alright for you it wouldn't be such a bad idea if my lady was into country. As for the confederate flags, what the hell is the deal with these folks. What is the point with the confederate flag waving if not to be some kind of anti-diversity symbol or something. It's like they yearn for it to be 60s era America again. Nothing wrong with being ignorant but to be ignorant and proud of it is pathetic.

I have been to a lot of NHL games, (my wife is Canadian) and never had any kind of problem or felt uncomfortable. In fact I see a lot of IR couples at NHL games.
