It's a german shepherd, correctly? My sister had one, her name was Lady, an amazing loyal dog.

I've castrated my last Doberman, when he was 9 months old. He was his whole life a puppy in his mind. Cuddly and cute. I would always do it again. And the cancer risk is minimized. I've lost the other two Dobermans at the age of 3 and 4 yrs, because of cancer. The last one got nine.

yep, German Sheppard and he isnt going under the knife... going to be a big strong tough guy. Im debating on sending him to school to be a service dog so i can take him on airplanes and other public transportation with me or just K9 training...

typical answer of a man..lol..tough and tough can be different things.. attacking and defending...willing to learn or stubborn.

    K9 traing? what is this?

hahha. well he is very eager to learn and not stubborn at all.

K9 training i want for him will be in the guard dog classification, more so than police training but if i can get him to be a certified assistance dog that may be the route i go down.

Are you talking about the sport of Schutzhund? And if he's to be an assistance dog, will that be for you personally? Sorry for the questions, I'm very interested in dog behaviour and training. :) I have a friend who trains and competes her GSDs in Schutzhund.

not so much of the sport, but the training methods yes. he is my personal dog yes however my daughters as a mild case of aspergers and i really want him trained to be a service dog only so that i can take him in public places. : X

selfish? maybe but i want to be able to know if my dog is with family, he knows the difference between a threat and not a threat and also be a compassionate dog with my daughter. the bright side is all of this is tax deductible!! yes, service dogs can be a tax write off.

i may have waited too long with this current dog so the thought is to get another in a year or so and put him or her into training as a lil pup.

I have several friends that have gotten their dogs registered as service dogs, even though they do not do a lot of "service dog" tasks... They just wanted to be able to bring their dog to live in dorms smh.

For some, it's as easy as showing proof of a disability, and a test of temperament.

And once it's classified as a service dog, no one is allowed to question the disability or the role of the dog. :) I don't think it works the same here in Australia.

And you haven't waited too long to train her. Many service dogs are taken from shelters as young adults and trained to be working service dogs.
Dogs can be trained to a high standard from pretty much any age.

dWEb, I have a friend in Az who has two service dogs and they were not pups when they started, actually her lab was a couple years old, so I don't think it's too late at all....lots of work involved in it, but it's a worthwhile thing.

They've decided on a name! Lil' dude's name is Thor, hehe.

Easy enough for a deaf person to say, and that's all I've been hearing through the walls, "NO, THOR! NO!" lmao.
