People talk about the Constitution like it's a holy document. It's not. Nothing that was ever written in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or the Declaration of Independence was was written with the consideration of the rights of Black people in mind. So when people talk indirectly about the 'sacredness' of the 2nd Amendment, understand if the Founding Fathers believed the right to bear arms was guaranteed to their slaves too, IT NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN. Everything about about our original laws written after the victory of the American Revolution are arbitrary and in many cases have to be seen through the prism in which they were written, and sometimes need to be updated in order to be relevant for present day.
Ok so do we need to update the constitution to say :Black people included? Does it now say black people are excluded? most importantly WE ARE NOT SLAVES!! I don't think you got the memo!!
No, the point is, by definition the Constitution is always subject to re-interpretation. The Founding Fathers expected it to be updated as needed, that's why there's an amendment process in the first place because they recognized the Constitution isn't some infallible sacred document. The 14th and 15th Amendment were written into the Constitution after the Civil War with the initial purpose in mind to include the rights of newly free Black people because before then our rights were not explicitly guaranteed. The 2nd Amendment was never written with the intent of securing the rights and liberties of Black folk, which is why IMO it's suspect when some people shout about 2nd Amendment rights. California Governor R. Reagan made it very clear when the Oakland based Black Panthers tried to assert their 2nd Amendment rights whose rights that law was really meant to protect.:smt067
People like Thurgood Marshall devoted their entire careers fighting the type of ignorance represented in your posts.
Free speech wasn't written with the intent of securing the rights and liberties of black folk either yet you and GL are still talking. That argument is ridiculous. Come on boba what happen to the smart brotha from all those other threads.
People are arguing the 2nd Amendment is a part of the Bill of Rights and therefore written in stone and can never be changed. People talk like there's something profoundly special enshrined in the 2nd Amendment. There isn't IMO. The Constitution can and should be changed based on evolving circumstances over time. The world the 2nd Amendment was written for has nothing at all similar with the world we live in today. Yes Black people today have the right of free speech and the right to bear arms today, but that wasn't always the case. And without modifying existing laws we wouldn't have these rights today. Laws that fail to address the current realities of present day life should always be changed. Saying we shouldn't question the 2nd Amendment because it's in the Bill of Rights and was written over 200 years ago and therefore perfect is a bad argument for not reconsidering an outdated law. When GL says the 2nd Amendment wasn't written for us, I think he's saying the law started out flawed and has had its meaning reinterpreted and and debated by lawmakers almost forever. Governor Cuomo isn't an anarchist. He's enlightened.
The next thing he is going to say is black people are not citizens until we get an honorable discharge from the corporations to which our ancestors provided slave labor. Hopefully then we will have constitutional rights.
The 2nd Amendment is a right I personally agree with. It was written to keep government honest. Cuomo isn't enlightened this is all a political ploy for him to get the Democratic nom in 2016. Registering bullets sales and guns retroactively only hinders the law abiding, criminals will just go out and steal guns especially since the names and addresses of gun owners are out there now. Just wait for people to go to work then break in and take shit. Or steal from gun stores. I am willing to eat crow if I see a drop in gun violence as a result but I have yet to see where heavy prohibition stops anything.
The second amendment and guns still? Sheesh. Hit the damn thing again.. I think I might have... Never mind. It's most definitely dead. Annnnddddd Here's this:
Oh. You are absolutely right! I forgot to be afraid of stuff that was "in" 150 years ago. Will have to remember that times don't change and that every time I take my picture it actually captures (gasp) my soul! Need to go consult a catholic priest regarding the health of caught soul. Brb yeah? (Wait for it........ Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaammmmmm. NO.)
Poor Tarsh She's so still in this thread under duress. Perhaps beasty could loan her use of his extended prominent hand and she could shoot to kill and put it out of its misery. I can't tell if I should laugh or cry when I come into this thread
You made it sound like the government hasn't enacted tyranny against its own people and it wasn't just slavery. It was from slavery all the way up to the induction of the Civil Rights movement where agents of the state and federal government relentlessly violated the basic human rights of its own citizens. You wanted an example well there it is. Don't get me started on what its done to the Japanese during WWII and even more recently Muslims in this country with Patriot Act. You act like they are a bunch of angels looking out for the interest of the people. Times rarely change we just devote our attention to other things.
You know that GL Boba and yourself have talked way more about the 2nd Amendment than those who actually own guns. No one started using it as an argument until you guys brought it up. Remember this entire thread started because a shitty paper decided to endanger people by printing their names and addresses in order to sell papers.
Um I could almost bet my first paycheck that you are very wrong about that. However, I'm on my phone with a bout of kick ass insomnia and have to get up for work (again) in less than two hours. If I'm not tired excessively after a brutal 14 hour day tomorrow I will prove it. If I am it will have to wait. But I WILL get around to it when I'm not dead tired.
