Comedians Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the brains behind the hit Comedy Central sketch show "Key & Peele," joked that President Barack Obama is the idol black nerds have longed for and needed.

"Obama was the best thing for black nerds everywhere. Finally we had a role model," Peele humorously told reporters recently. "Before Obama, we basically had Urkel."

Black nerds, aka "blerds," is a way to describe African-American intellectuals in a time when it's finally cool to be something other than an athlete or rapper.

I think nerd culture in general is rising, but not so much in a good way. People call themselves nerds because it's becoming cool. They play a couple of video games, watch the Dark Knight and wear a fucking Iron Man shirt and think they are suddenly nerds. They also think nerds only fuck with math, science, video games, comics and D&D as opposed to just being knowledgeable about something to the point where it might be obsessive and loving it. Most of these new jack nerds are doing it for the trend.

 

Pretty much described New York hipsters who have over run Brooklyn.
What annoys the fuck out of me are hot girls who say "I'm kind of a nerd. I read all the Harry Potter and Hunger Game books"
That's definitely not a nerd. Now show me a chick who spends 4 hours a day playing Halo 4 and has an encyclopedic knowledge of The Matrix and Star Wars Trilogy(no self respecting nerd counts the latest 3 pieces of shit as movies) then you have a nerd my friend.

 

Boom!!! Right there. At the end of the day, they're still gonna talk shit on "real nerds". They wanna be just enough of a nerd to I guess clash with their other traits to make them unique. They fucking aren't.

 

I love that Black folks are no longer ashamed to admit their passions for the nerdier things in life. I myself am a practicing nerd. Ive stood in line to buy a video game at the midnight release, I have 3 long boxes of comics under my bed, and I know that Chewbacca has a son named Lumpawaroo (Lumpy).

However, I am still weary about how the Black nerd is portrayed in the media. Hollywood has always looked for ways to undermine Black masculinity, and making the Black guy the emasculated nerd is a route they have gone to before.

 

If you have to tell somebody that you are a nerd, then you probably aren't.

 

pretty much. It's like sexy smart nerdy and masculine can't exist in the same space. They seem very intimidated by that but to be fair I see the same problem with Indians and other Asians. Excluding martial arts films those dudes don't get to occupy that space either.

I agree with TDK....a research article I read was about recruiting and retaining black Teen males (BTM) in math stated that BTM who are smart hide it because they believe its not macho to be smart.

 

At least those brothers had more style than say Steve Urkel.

 

Pretty much, so far the only time I've seen a good mixture of a black nerd with masculinity was in ATHF, but frylocks not even human.

It's not really worth watching. It's some silly Adult Swim TV show about a pack of fries, a soda drink, and a piece of meat having misadventures. I watched it a long time ago and then wondered why did I even like this in the first place...
