Rev Alan McKean, a Church of Scotland minister, was revealed as the author of The Scent of Time, a book about a 24-year-old time traveller who enjoys sexual encounters during his journey through history.

He was unrepentant about the novel’s racy passages, arguing that sex is “a part of life”, but members of his two congregations in the Scottish Highlands have been left upset and questioning whether he should continue in his post.

The Kirk last night admitted it had not seen the book before publication and was unaware of its contents.

The 232-page novel, part of a trilogy, was published in the summer under the name Alan T McKean but some worshippers have only just made the link with their minister.

Rev McKean said: “Naturally, people were shocked when they found out I wrote the book. However, I believe the stark contrast between my personal and professional life is giving the book the notoriety.

“The purpose of the book was to write a realistic story. And the majority of 24-year-old guys do spend a lot of time thinking about girls.” He added: “People think that ministers don't know about sex but it's a part of life.”

Although the text makes reference to intercourse, he insisted the sex scenes were not graphic. The minister leads two congregations on the Black Isle at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Church and Avoch Parish Church.

Stephanie McKean, the minister’s wife, admitted some worshippers thought the book was “too sexy” to have been written by a pastor.

“Some people, who remained anonymous, were not happy. Somebody came up to Alan in the church and said there was concern,” she said.

“They said some people were questioning his future in the church because of his book. Alan was really worried as he thought he might lose his jobs, but that hasn't happened.”

A Church of Scotland spokesman said it had not seen the book and was unaware of its content.

The novel follows the adventures of Drew Faulkner, who at the start is stuck in a dead-end job in Edinburgh. His life changes when he sees a painting of a beautiful woman and he time travels back to 1867 to try and win her heart.

Describing one of Drew’s numerous encounters, Rev McKean wrote that a female character claimed to have forgotten her nightie “but her eyes gave everything away”.

In a later section of the book, Drew, who is also the narrator, said: “We rested briefly and then came together again, hungry for each other's bodies, loving until our passion- but not our love was spent.”

Another steamy section relates how the hero, in a state of arousal, dances the tango with a lover.

Casper, The Friendly Ghost was the creation of a priest. But, Casper was not a ghost of a dead person, but a spirit of kindness and compassion. But, this story is different. And not so different. This minister probably wanted to be a writer before he went to become a minister. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker were in Med school before they were famous authors. Perhaps he missed his calling and found it again.

See Somewhere In Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The story was written by Richard Matheson(one of my favorite writers) deals with the same thing just about.
