I love watching documentaries, lectures & talks and am always looking for new ones. I'd love to see what anyone here thinks is worth a watch.
My favorite is UC Berkley's "Conversations with History" series (coolest theme song ever). Some of my favorite installments: I like TED Talks too:
Since you love documentary (I do, too!) on top of what others may suggest here, there are some good ones posted a while ago that you may also like... http://www.whitewomenblackmen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14566&highlight=documentaries @ lectures, I have 2 great ones from memory I will try to find online, as well as a mesmerizing NPR interview/story on Louisiana housing red-tape abuse that left me disbelief.
The only documentary I've seen lately is Square Grouper. I grab a lecture whenever I can, especially science and international affairs.
Some TED ones trying to think of the ones I really liked. This one for sure.
This one is good. It's about the US's "war on drugs" and how it's pretty much a failure. http://www.breakingthetaboo.info/
The Shock of the New, by another great Australian Robert Hughes. Great critic, great historian, great writer. Just watched Transcendent Man about inventor/futurist Ray Kurzweil and the impending technological singularity where man and machine become one. I definitely recommend it
I agree. I have watched several he made..........one on Miami mega jail and the other on Westboro Bapstist Church founding family.
That church family is CRAZY! I watched that and then the follow up one they made four years later. They are still crazy as hell. SMH.
Those Westboro Church family is crazy. They used to do a weekly fax to my old boss saying her husband and son were burning in hell (after their deaths in a plane crash) for being "fag enablers". They were sickening.
They are nasty and disgraceful. The mother is a nasty piece of work and the kids are following her lead unfortunatley. Your poor boss.
They are so crazy. They give a bad name to Christianity. They have their own agenda and translate the bible according to their whims. I came across it because the city my mom lives in, in Missouri, had a guy killed in Afganistan. The guy was a friend of my brother's in school. Westboro came to his funeral and announced they were doing it because they hate fags. Nothing, nothing to do with this dead soldier or his family. Their behavior was reprehensible. The people there were angry and so much so that thousands (I think my mom said nearly 2000) of ordinary citizens gave up their day and made a wall for blocks around the church where the funeral was held. Blocking the crazy Westboro people from yelling at the soldiers family as they grieved their child. It's a good size university town so educated population. They don't go for that ignorant behavior. I was googling Westboro and came across that and when I saw it was also a documentary by Louis Thoureax, and the same guy as the Miami Mega Jail one I had just seen, I watched it. Ore you should watch the Miami one. So scary. Most of the people there have been there for years and never convicted of anything yet, just accused. Just awaiting trial. Here is America. Sigh.
I posted it above. It's on youtube from BBC. It's two parts. Very scary. The only thing not scary in the whole thing to me was the sandwich they gave them in their cell. Let's just say I am a law abiding person but it has me scared straight regardless.
