damned if you do, damned if you dont on one hand, affirmative action waters down the genuine brilliance of blacks that are actually qualified/more qualified than their counterparts. on the other hand, this country has such a long and poisonous past that contributes to the socioeconomic makeup (or a significant portion of it), which is a reason why african-americans need AA. an interesting article I read debunks this whole idea of getting somewhere based on merit alone, stating that there is a cadre of students that get accepted into universities because of the alumni status of a friend or relative. If I can find it, i'll post it here..but it sheds light on affirmative action versus other benefits that people have by being white/white with college educated parents, etc which are NEVER highlighted in 'fairness' conversations
As long as racism exists AA will still be there and this story and others like it are living proof there is not post racial hiring for Blacks.
Even if there were no AA, there are some people who are just going to believe any Black person is unqualified. That's a fact. That's what people thought before AA and it's what people think now in many cases. At least with AA, you have one more criteria used to get a foot in the door. Black folks are still fractional percentages at most colleges anyway, which is why I never understood so much hostility towards the program.
Andreboba,it is because White don't want to end their privileges of being White so they try to guilt trip Blacks on this merit thing only when Blacks discover they can't get that job if they believe the White conservative nonsense.
Its a damn shame. The worst part is that you cant ever bring shit like this up without people claiming that youre "whining and complaining"
true! the only other thing it could be is an A/B Test scenario... most people... yellow, brown, black or white if faced with an obstacle and vent their frustration it can be seen as "whining and complaining". the real problem is when people think of obstacles as deterrents and or defeat. when people start to realize their attitude really does determine their altitude, little shit like sexism and racism just becomes another hurdle that you jump over to reach your goal. i'm lot going to lie and say that when times get rough and your looking for a finger to point at why something isn't how you think it should be that its not easy to find a target to blame. we as humans need to get over that and use any obstacle as fuel and motivation.
why is techyville reposting a year old article like its something brand new? this just read wrong to me, and im not discounting that it happens. we know non white sounding names dont get the call backs. this is a year old article though.
Wrong, its even worse than that. The majority of whites aren't even aware of their white privilege so there is even a deeper disconnect to the reality of this issue.
paniro isnt a tom....just an idealogue. too much of one. he believes that if you work hard they will see your efforts and not your race. I cant argue with him tooooo much on that because people at the end of the day is about that money. the problem is that race does play a role in it. even a person who is trying not to be a racist is a times a racist for the lack of a better term. IGGY is a tom and proud of it
I agree that you can't let it hold you back but we shouldn't pretend it doesn't exist or be forced to pretend it doesn't exist to make those who benefit from it feel comfortable about their privilege. When you can't get a job because of nothing other than your race or gender why shouldn't you speak up?
