They were too busy killing each other with third rate firearms given to them for the lives of fellow Africans shipped to the New World, as well as more concerned about whose tribe was more powerful.

Far too often Africa has allowed itself to be manipulated time and time again.

Japan, China, etc, only became strong by avoiding interference in their personal affairs and strengthening themselves from within.

Remember at one point in time Western powers ran amok in China seeking out their own interests.

See what happened when China finally put its foot down against imperialism and focused on building itself back up.

I keep going back to this question as to why Africa is the richest continent on Earth resource wise and yet the poorest.

Of course I ask the question rhetorically given I know the reasons to a T.

    I see your point CD.

I think it's definitely different for us as we aren't American. It's completely different over there - there's a lot of history that we can read about but never truly understand.

I'm gonna ramble so feel free to skim over this.

I honestly don't see how anyone can feel fear for one race over another. Again, this is probably because I'm British and I was blessed with a mother who never taught me hate and prejudice.

Honestly - black men have committed the worst acts against me but how can I hold that against an entire group of people? The acts of one don't represent the whole - whether those acts are good or bad.

I know I have a very simplistic view but I really don't think I am in a place to talk about it in any greater detail. I don't know what it's like to be black in America and to speak as if I do would be really fucking stupid. And although I know a little about the history I don't know enough to speak on it. I love when GQ and the others post because I get to learn a lot. It's good to sit back and listen.

    Racism, ableism, sexism, homophobia...

Anyone who thinks any of the above are 'dead' is lying to themselves.

I actually don't think this is a bait thread. It's important to talk about these things. Pulling wool over your eyes is never a solution to a problem

I think one of the main problems with society and prejudice is ignorance. People don't take the time to learn about other people - their culture, their struggles. People 'fear' what they don't know and don't understand. This has been my observation anyway.

When I read things like this I just feel really blessed that although I grew up in a predominantly white area I was taught about others and taught never to judge people. Not by my school but by my mother. I'm going to make sure I do the same for my son.

Your post is full of wisdom. :smt023
And you really grew up to a wonderful woman by forgiving and believing in your principles.
Whenever I've made bad experiences, I've had a helping hand by a person close of the same group/country- just keep your eyes always open.

    LOL, there is still time.

Africa has to look out for its own interest, The World Bank, IMF, Western powers will never have the best interest of it in their hearts, if it can continued to be exploited for its resources.

Internal corruption continues to be the bane of African countries that have resources, be it oil, platinum, diamonds, gold, timber, etc.

As long as corruption exists the issues will persist that impact massive First World development on the scale seen in China, Japan and the West or even places like Singapore and Malaysia.

Would rep you if I could.

I think that is why you can be so open minded, because you are willing to see the different sides to a story and don't let your personal experiences control you to the point that you let it encompass those that have nothing to do with the equation. "OMG, a black thug robbed me, they're all criminals, I hate black people" :)

Its one of the reasons I am glad that I was born in Guyana but grew up in America, it enabled me to come from a Caribbean culture, but also experience an American culture firsthand. It forces you to see things in a wider lens and not just a narrow view if you exist in a homogeneous setting and highly ignorant of others in a world of innumerable cultures and customs.

The main thing I cannot stand is disrespectful people be it racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other myriad of social ignorance against others. I have no time for people who lack respect for others.

All you can do is give respect to others and expect the same in return when interacting with others out here. :)

How is the article race baitimg. Are never to o talk about race again? And please stop validating the bs mindset that there are crazies in every rsce. Once again no fucking duh but what other community is hekd accountable the way blacks are? Thats the issue thats the problem. An Asian gang robs a string of businesses Asians as a group arent looked at as thugs. A black dude in Philly does it suddenly thats a confirmation thst all black dudes are thugs.
I dont know if this is a testament to CF's colorblindness or her down right ignorance but dismissing shit like this is insensitive

Really enjoyed your post. Would rep you if I could.
I find it interesting that when you say the same exact thing as GQ or I though its recieved so differently. Still tryung to figure out if its a racial or gender bias. Not your fault of course just intrigued by the different reactions.

Truth. But we also need to remember that Africans viewing themselves as one is a new development. They have historically seen themselves as (and are) distinct nations with historical divisions, much the way France and Germany fought like cats and dogs until the end of WWII.

Oh no doubt these things go to the heart of societies the world over.

Recently in Kenya you have one tribe burning down the villages of another and killing women and children over access to resources like water and grazing pastures for their cattle, etc as well as the underlying, longstanding social tensions.

The one thing that imperial powers did to Africa was unite to divide it up and exploit it no matter their differences, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, France, Portugal, Italy, etc.

The clear and present goal of the presence of these nations in Africa was systematic exploitation of resources above and beyond anything else.

Even to this day through international banking and monetary policies it carries on.

There is no excuse that there shouldn't be one First World African country capable of sitting permanently on the U.N. Security council. I find that remarkable and telling in global geopolitical terms.

Little things like that add up and give us a perspective of global influence and affairs.
