The Le- prefix we see in so many Black names I believe is french.
LeRoy used to be a very popular name in the Black community, and is an old French name. The actual French spelling meaning I believe 'king', is Le roi.

That Le- prefix has been around the world twice in the 'hood, but it's not a made up thing. It's followed the progression of most words in that we borrow, mix and match words and sounds when forming new names.

I used to say this shit back in the day, " I'm down with ALL white dudes named Tyrone," lol because I used to go to school with a White guy in HS named Tyrone and I thought it was like the most bizarre thing in the world.

Tyrone has been owned by the Black community for decades, but actually it's an old Irish name.

I've heard variations of this name, Tiron, Ty, Tee, etc.

Add the Le- prefix and you get the newly minted Leron, another brotha staple.

I think Black folk get too much grief for their names. It's not just the outrageous psychodelic ghetto names from outer space, it's names that 'sound' like they belong to Black folk because they're rarely used anymore in the White community.

there was a white actor, in the 1940s, whose name was tyrone power..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrone_Power

today, someone who might hear that name would think it was a black man's name...

Let's keep it 100. We all know those kinds of names are more a barrier than not having them if decide to work in the world outside of sports and entertainment. Is it an absolute? No but it is something to consider but then again maybe it could work for you.
Like the story of the two kids winner and loser.

Totally agree with this. I think you can name your kid whatever you want. If it's classical name or totally made up its whatever. However, I do think its irresponsible of a parent not to take this decision seriously and consider how the name you chose may affect your child..
My first name was very uncommon when I was growing up and I got made fun of a lot even though its not a crazy name. Now it is very popular and I hear it everywhere. My mother also thought it was a good idea to give me three legal middle names (all appear on my ss card) and let me tell you it is hell filling out paperwork that requests your legal name and provides three lines.

Any parent who names their black son "Simeon" should be brought up on charges.

    I met a Quantrell and a Jamayne.

Say what you want, some ghetto names are sexy.

I met a DMott. that's a lame name lol. Another ghetto name from a former poster was Di'Aire I think. Only thing I don't get in ghetto names are the random apostrophes everywhere.

Sexiest Ghetto Name I met (lol): Kiyon. Hottttt... name and guy.

I met a pregnant woman yesterday, and I'd asked her if she'd picked a name for her son yet and it was Dashawn or Daquayne or some such thing. In all fairness, her name was similar, so perhaps she was perpetuating the family line...
