Question for the Aussies

One drop can kill 100 men? What kind of crazy, super deadly reptiles have you Aussies got down there? Please tell me this is not common, as we are planning a trip down under next year.

Loki, it's a well known fact that our little pacific island has some very mean creepy crawlies. It's very rare for snakes to be spotted in our cities, so don't stress.

Where and when are you coming over? Let me know if you get to Melbourne and I can give you some great tips of what to see

 

Maybe loki is coming to Aussieland to go to the bush. I hope I got that slang correct.

A good buddy is moving to Canberra with his family, we are planning on visiting him there, if memory serves that is somewhat close to Melbourne?

 

Never been to our countries capital, it's closer to NSW.

Although Inland Taipans ARE the most venomous snake in the world, they aren't the most dangerous. They live in areas where they very rarely come in contact with humans, so the majority of Australians have never and will never see one outside a zoo. This case was highly unusual.

What you have to watch out for are the Redback spiders, Funnel Web spiders, Tiger snakes, Brown snakes, Red belly black snakes, other various Taipans, Saltwater crocodiles, Great White sharks, Bull sharks, Tiger sharks, Stingrays, Box jelly fish, Coneshell and Blue-ringed octopus.

You should be fine though.

I had to laugh at your warning Sin,,,,, you probably added to his concern.

But Loki the ladies are right, you will most likely not see a single one of these depending on where you are going.... The sharks scare me the most and but I grew up by the sunny Gold Coast beaches and have never had an encounter and I was at the beach almost every morning for twenty years... All the others that Sin mentioned I have never come across unless they were in a glass cage or cage in general at a zoo.

If you come to Brisbane, make sure you head to Steve Irwins Australian Zoo.... Their croc show is worth the visit... If you want anymore tips let me know.:smt023 And if you come to Brisbane you just have to go to The Gold Coast, the beaches are perfect for Surfing...

 

We have funnel web spiders under our house, as well as redbacks (my sister was bitten on the arse by one :smt042). We have black snakes, tiger snakes and the odd brown snake around here too. As well as bull sharks, tiger sharks and stingrays in our beaches and rivers (only bullsharks in the fresh water rivers though).I think there are blue-ringed octopus here too. There's also blue bottles (a.k.a man o' war/man of war jelly fish) here, I was (as a child) stung by one of them and it hurt like HELL.

I'm surprised you've never seen any where you are. I would have thought you'd have at least some of the snakes and redbacks. *shrugs*

Oh and there are paralysis ticks too, but they're mostly a danger to our pets, not us.

 

Nope, I say I am lucky to not have crossed their path.

I checked her list. That's a lot of dangerous critters but you have them wherever you live. Here our list is rattlesnakes, bears and mountain lions if you go to the high country you have to know how to behave. Most people who do stupid things that cost their life are sadly tourists. When you are on vacation some people lose regard for danger. Many have gotten in the "nice little mountain stream" to swim only to drown and realized too late the force of water as it rushes down a mountain is not a force you can deal with.

The best thing to do is educate yourself like loki is and learn how to be safe where you are going to travel to.

Loks, Canberra, whilst being the porn capital of Australia, really is full of politicians and is rather tame...you and your family will be very safe, and if you do leave the bra you have willing tour guides in 3 states

 

Thanks for the info Tarsh, much appreciated. The diver in me would love to get up to the great barrier reef, but alas it is too far away for the time we are planning to spend on this trip. Had no idea that Canberra had that kind of reputation, needless to say we will be sticking to family friendly activities.:grin:

 

My best childhood memories are from my family holidays at the Whitsunday Islands, Airlie Beach is great for families on vacation. It really is worth it. Not sure where you will be venturing but that is worth a thought.


This makes me want to go back again.

One-hit kill Reptilians should be the least of your problems. At best...avoid the waffle eating bunyips that scrounge around Eastern Australia. Bring lots of Vegemite bait and a pokeball if you want to be successful capturing one.
