My lil munchkin Bambi, he is just a joy.

I have a question actually. Does anyone here clip their dogs nails themselves and if so do you have any tricks to doing it? Bambi almost needs to be wrapped like a newborn baby before he will let me near his paws to clip his nails. I attempted to do them tonight and ended up struggling so much that I only got one paw done.

No I don't dress him up in general, just in winter, he can't stand the cold.... If he doesn't have a jumper or jacket on he can't be found because he will be hiding under a blanket or covers somewhere...

So cute curley. Bambi makes the cutest faces for pics. Murphy is the same on brushing his teeth. He turns into a shark and bites me. He hates it. :( I even bought him beef flavored toothpaste/toothbrush at Petsmart and no go. :smt043

Ask a groomer to do it for you. LOL Sometimes if you go slowly you can get them to like it. Clip one nail and give him a treat, then let him go. Collect him again the next day and clip another, give him a treat, let him go. Then collect him in a few hours and clip another one (or two) and give him a treat then let him go again. Go slow, even if it takes two weeks to do his nails the first time.
Basically it's about letting him know that getting his nails clipped is a good, safe thing.

However, it's much easier when a dog is already comfortable with people touching his feet (everytime you pat him, make sure you touch him all over, including in between his toes and hold his toes for a moment before letting go and moving on).

Some dogs take a lot of time to get use to it, mostly because they don't really know what we're doing when we grab their feet and start chopping away with the clippers.

So...if you want the easy way out...let a groomer do it. :) OR, just a thought, you could walk him over hard, rough surfaces (concrete, asphalt etc.) on a regular basis...that often does the job for you.

Also, there is a tool called a 'dremel' which is BRILLIANT for grinding down dogs nails. I used it on my Chihuahua, when I had him, and it was so much better than clipping. It takes some time and sometimes dogs don't like the noise, but my baby would just fall asleep when I did his. :)

edit: I added a picture of my Chihuahua, Jesse James, who died in 2007 (age 17).

My sister mentioned his face pulling in photos too, she asked why he always wants to look sad in them, lol... And for Murphy,,,,,,, Awwwww if only they could speak what they are thinking at the time...... "get away from my teeth Mom, geez".....

Thanks Sin, I really appreciate it,,,, I will do this. One nail at a time for now, with a treat and hopefully he will learn to see that it is ok..
Thanks BD, that means a lot... He is my lil dude...
