I've been breaking out in hives whenever I get direct sun exposure, and I was told I may have a sun allergy. My doc said I should schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to find out, which takes money I don't have to spare at the moment.

I got stuck out in the sun (& heat) for a bit on Saturday and today for work related crap, so in addition to the hives I've got a sunburn too. Yay for me! lol Thankfully I don't think I burned bad enough to peel.

Does anyone have any experience with a sun allergy or have any suggestions for dealing with the hives? I took an antihistamine and used some allergy cream, but they aren't helping much. I bumped up my sunblock to SPF 100 for my face & SPF 70 for my body, so hopefully that will help.

Tam, when it comes to sunscreen, it has to have either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in it, and preferably both for it to benefit you....if neither are in it, it's just a waste of money! They are the ingredients that block the rays that do the damage to our skin. Unfortunately as far as spf goes, anything over 50 is a waste, as it really doesn't do anymore than the 50 will. I worked in Medical Esthetics for a long time and learned from the best on this...as far as the hives, don't have an answer for you...sorry!

Thanks, TC. I appreciate the info. For years I've been extra careful where the sun is concerned, but it's being especially mean to me these days. When it was suggested I might have an allergy, I had to laugh because it sounded crazy to me. Evidently it's not as crazy as I thought. Even a short ride in the car with the sun on my arm breaks me out. Since it only seems to happen to the skin directly exposed, I guess my best bet is to keep covered up when the sun is shining. As for the hives, I guess I just have to wait 'em out.

Back in the hotel in Connecticut today...NYC was something else..

Harvey was an amazing show! Got to see Jim Parsons in person, even though I wasn't anywhere close to him. They whisked him out of the theater and he barely signed autographs. Carol Kane was also in the show, and she ignored everyone who was outside who wanted a picture. So strange.

Then, leaving NYC today, we were getting onto I-95 from along the Hudson, merging with GW Bridge people, and we were stopped in traffic. Some guy comes out of nowhere and rear ends us...HARD. The car went probably half of a foot forward. It was crazy. I was already irritated with my mom and her lack of ability to walk anywhere (in the few days we've been down here, if we've walked half of a mile, I'll be SHOCKED..I CANNOT WAIT to get some activity!)...anyway, she sends ME out of the car to get the information from the guy, and there's nowhere to really stand to get out of traffic while I'm getting his info, and she's screaming and yelling out the window, laying on the horn, etc. and then when I finally get in the car, she's screaming at me and telling me that I'm a fucking idiot, I could have gotten killed, etc. etc. and I'm like 'WTF?! I'M THE ONE WHO GOT OUT OF THE FUCKING CAR TO BEGIN WITH!!' If she was so worried, SHE could have gotten out!! But no! She sends ME!

    *sigh*

And can I just say again, dude..my back hurts from the lack of walking I've done. I've literally been in a car for 4-6 hours every day, and when we walked the few blocks from 45th street to 53rd, we had to stop like, 5 times, because she was 'hot' and needed to go into a store to get out of the heat. I was like 'WTF?! Every time I tried to be like 'hey, let's walk' she'd be like 'oh no we're driving there. It's too far to walk'...'Uh, mom? It's three blocks...' 'Yeah, exactly.'

    *facepalm*

AND, these places we're staying don't have fitness centers...so I can't even get a workout in. That sort of thing isn't even on her radar to check....she was more interested in getting a room with a fridge and a mini kitchen....cause, you know, we're cooking so many meals in!
Tomorrow, it's about 6.5 hours to drive home...I can't wait to get back home and get back to crossfit and hot yoga. I need to do something..ANYTHING!!

Thanks for listening to me vent. I just needed to get it all out.
