"Barack Obama called for "common sense" gun restrictions in the aftermath of last week's mass killing in Aurora, Colo., in a speech to a major civil rights group Wednesday evening.

Addressing the National Urban League's annual conference in New Orleans, the president said he supported the right to own firearms, but called on Congress to restrict the purchase of assault weapons. Obama pressed for background checks to prevent mentally unbalanced people from buying guns. He said such regulations "shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

    For the speech...

    Why not?

You can make just about anything into a weapon if you so desire. So why make guns the bad guys?

Guns cant be banned anymore than nuclear weapins. The genie is out of the bottle so why restrict law abiding citizens? The people who murder and rob will still have theirs. Besides strict gun laws doesnt prevent shit. Chicago anyone

I can understand refining some of the control on guns, in terms of monitoring who is actually collecting what and if they are stable enough to have them. I can tolerate that I suppose. For me it is when people start talking about getting rid of them altogether for your average citizen. I mean, what about isolated cases in which a gun can save someone's life?

Or like stopping an attack on someone or better yet a group of individuals if you're outnumbered?

It just seems so extreme to get rid of them all. And though this may be more on the tin foil hat side of things, what happens if there is some huge nation wide riot? or invasion from another country? Those are worse case scenarios, but it would be nice to think that even at the base level of this country, we'd still have a fighting chance if police officers and the army can't keep things under control. At least you could protect those in your life boat.

who would you rather face ... a mad man with a gun or a knife?

what would you hope for....a madman with a semi-automatic with 50 round clip or a hand gun with a 5 round clip?

how long do you think a gun fight will last if a guy breaks into you house?

First: a mad man with a knife?, So what do I have for protection, a knife also, correct? Knives are deadly, too.

Second: Aren't they both manufactured guns, which you are against, period?

Third: Whoever is the better shot, obviously. This is where the playing field becomes level.

10 out of 10 you will not have a gun or a knife with you so... you can answer the question now especially when you are at a movie

    My Overall Opinion

NOTE: Took much longer, but wanted to formulate my thoughts in a concise and structured manner.

In short, I firmly believe in reasonable gun control as oppose to simply having strong restrictions or loose laws. Given how our history's attitude towards gun ownership, it wouldn't make a lick of sense to suddenly place greater restrictions since a lot of people value their pop toys and if there's an all out ban, then expect a bunch of overly paranoia, individuals who forgot the art of pugilism to take up arms and go on a panic attack.

Plus, the main people affected by those restrictions are the ones who are law-abiding citizens. Black markets can still acquire such arms, even those of an assault brand. So, panicky people + black markets = disaster.

However, I feel it's foolish for laws to be loosened to where just about anybody can get a gun. Background checks and the lot are tantamount to determine who can get a gun and who cannot. Plus, how crazy do you have to be to carry your gun EVERYWHERE, even if you're a student on college grounds, where campus officers are present? You know damn well there would be more killings on campus, mainly if we're dealing with students angered over a failing grade. So, professors would be a target and it would be one hell of a shoot out.

So, it's a complicated issue, but rest assure you that given this right to bare arms, and despite the high killings in this country through gun violence, we still have our safety and health. It's just our sense of maturity needs to evolve a bit to where the need for guns are no more.

Why restrict law abiding citizens?? I know of many things that are illegal yet available to criminals. The gun control laws were originally rooted in racism, I don't think that was mentioned here. The kkk did not want blacks to own guns for obvious reasons. Now that many black people own guns the kkk are not as quick to go around burning crosses in yards and threating them while they are in their homes are they? (although blacks killing each other is more of a problem now I don't think that is because of guns) Another point I want to make is that the Assault weapons ban is based on how a gun looks and not how dangerous the gun is. If they are going to ban any gun then why not ban shot guns? Within 35 yards the shotgun is by far the most deadly handheld weapon invented by man other than of a flame thrower. Ask the Germans about the crippling trench warfare we gave them in WW2 using shotguns. If that twisted James Holmes dude would have used 00 buckshot in that theatre he would have killed almost everyone. However shotguns are closely associated with the american hunting Dad and not the terrorists. The media wants to make a big deal on how much ammo the Holmes dude had at home when the fact is he could not have carried 6,000 rounds in the theatre unless he used a forklift, and do we really expect a criminal to obey laws about the size of magazines?? Unfortunatly as long as they sell soap and Gas, some twisted individual will have the ability to harm innocent people. If more people would report suspicious individuals it may help, at least more than worthless regulations. Even if everyone were to decide to get rid of all their guns, I would not support the stance, my sister is single and lives alone. why must she engage in hand to hand combat with anyone in her own house, let alone a 300 pound man? Gun control works if you ask Hitler, Idi Amin and a long line of dictators who used it to control the people. It does not matter that the government is advanced in technology, if they became rouge and denied the people all of their constitutional rights they would not be able to defeat ALL of the law abiding citizens of this country because most of us are armed. If they killed everyone, what would be the point of that?? I say leave the Gun laws as it is and sue Cali for your gun rights. :smt071
