Here is her apology to everyone except the people she insulted. She's a winner.

    http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/2...-team-for-offensive-twitter-remark/?hpt=hp_t1

"I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights," she wrote. "My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races. I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family."

Public apologies are always funny to me because they are apologizing because they caught a ton of shit and lost a sponsor or something not because they feel bad. I don't know why people demand apologies and give them half the time.

That is what I am saying. She apologizes to everyone who could help her get where she wants to go. She doesn't apologize for insulting people of another country. If she said Americans smell and are stupid .........I would expect her to apologize to Americans NOT her coach and sponsors.

Then like Refugee said her remarks arent racist then are they?
Also who gets to make the decision that the millions of Africans and/or African immigrants are offended? Why does their claim to be offended outweigh my claim not to be offended. only thing this girl did was make a bad joke. She didnt destroy a life. Damn

The people who say things on social media are not aware of the outcome of their actions. Thanks to the Greeks on Twitter who called her out since if they were silent and she wins the gold or other medal she would had to give it back and more scandal for Greece.

The unfunny 'joke' was in really poor taste. He apology also came two days too late.

The punishment was too harsh, though. Would have been much more awesome if an African beat her in the triple-jump.

I'm assuming she is addressing any of whom were offended here....

"I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights"...

She added those who believed in her, in addition, further on.

I would love for Appiah and Naija to weigh in on this. Did her comment cause families to starve or riots in the street? This shit is plain exvessive. Fine her and call it day.

Then when does a joke like that become something to raise hell over? Because someone else saying the same exact thing could catch a lot more shit and not be seen as just a bad joke.

She doesn't directly apologize to Africans. What she says is the same as saying sorry that made you mad....not sorry I said it.

The spirit of the games is competition. These athletes represent their country. Why was she cocky enough to post anything of this sort? She should have just been quiet and humble and let her athleticism speak for her and her country.

Greece has recently experienced an influx of BLACK Africans into their country so let's not play that game.
Secondly, what she said was RACIST because she made the assumption that the West Nile Virus was specifically associated with Black Africans. That's stereotyping at its worst.
The West Nile virus may have originated in Africa, but it's not an African(people's) disease.

It's the same as claiming AIDS is a gay disease.

    She's a dumb bitch.

Hope she enjoys watching the Olympics in hi def.:smt019

Well before you answered this post, it I read the apology and added the part that was somehow left out.....

"I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account..."

I think the girl is sorry. Imo, it sounded more like she was repeating a stupid corny joke, instead of making it up off the top of her head. In the world of couth and class, she's an oblivious idiot.

Like it was suggested, a fine, perhaps a future sanction, but not to disqualify her. The knee-jerk punishment does not fit her 'crime'.

Influx? Interesting...because when I have lived/visited on the several occasions, Africans are and have always been a permanent part of the landscape. Africa is a boat-ride away. Greeks and Africans have always intermingled. In fact, one the highlights for me is to be able to converse in fluent Greek with BM there...it's bloody charming. :smt050

Since i was a kid in London and when i lived in New York and Washington, i got to realise that the worst thing than being black in a nation dominated by white people is being African especially black African because everybody takes potshots at you including other black people who are not African born and that includes African Americans and Black Carribeans. TDK you were asking if her comments affected Africans socially in terms of hunger et al. If a white person makes a joke about Black Americans does it change the social disadvantages that blacks in America face? Does that make it right TDK? For someone who is so quick to shout racism isnt it rich of you to try to belittle what the woman said? You TDK always tell white people they dont get it because they dont know what it is to be black and the predjudice that blacks face. Well let me tell you, you dont get it because you are not African.
