i think what he did was tactically the best thing to do, in that situation with no police around for god knows how long.

This ain't Call Of Duty where you get to respawn after you're mortally hit. One thing I rarely question anymore is instinct. If your body tells you to run there's very little you can do about it unless you have training.

 

marines get scared while in the fleet before land deployments, because they know their chances of getting killed raise significantly

vietnam and the heavy fighting was wrapped up by then, but Germany was still a popular destination for units

combat would have been unlikely, but as with military service, you really never know what's going to pop up during your enlistment

unless you actually went 11B during vietnam/iraq...then you pretty much knew you'd be rotated for a few combat tours
