I'm pretty sure you have misconstrued what the social contract is. The Social Contract is the populace surrendering some freedoms for the benefit of protection from the government. Where does that have any correlation to business and being successful? Because the government "allows" you to be free and "protects" you? Where did the government give ANY advancement to Steve Jobs? Steve Jobs and Wozniack built that company out of the garage of Jobs' home. Yes, Mr. Obama THAT WAS HIS success. And there are many other cases.
As an apple certified teck....(yes i spelled that wrong on purpose) let me just put this forward on behalf of Steve Jobs and his astounding success. Yes and and Wozniack built it from the ground up. But guess what? If NO ONE LIKED IT, they would not have been successful. Is obama saying they had absolutely nothing to do with it? not at all. They had investors to begin with. They were two young guys with NO MONEY. YOU DONT START SUCCESSFUL. And now we are back to the entitlement epidemic in america. They built it, from scratch. Yay! I now have a job because of what they did before I was even born. They did not, however, do it on their own. And apples success is not dependent on it's own self being. But of course for you right wing conservatives...every man is an island and fuck anyone else who can't possibly be any worth to me.
Man, GTFO. The part that they're attacking him for was clearly taken out of context. If they put an attack up on a conservative blog or on Fox "News," idiots like you will repeat it. Shit's pathetic. I've gone on record here saying that I don't even like Obama, but it's bullshit like this that makes the entire political process so fucked up.
What the hell are you talking about? They BUILT A PRODUCT out of the garage of Jobs home, and an investor felt this product was worth enough to invest in. How is that NOT building something from scratch to be successful? Do you realize what your saying? In your line of thinking, there has never in the history of the world been a successful human being. Screw the landmark ideas of the 21st century...the inventors didn't do shit, it was all the government surroundings that ALLOWED them to think they way they did. They wouldn't even exist if they didn't have parents so give them some credit too....
The 'social contract' in contemporary political science refers to individuals giving up their singular rights in order to create a state built upon a foundation of justice and a system of laws. By giving up some individualism for the creation of the state, we as citizens don't have to build our own roads, mass transportation, communications systems, national defense, public safety, emergency services or be subject to the aribitrary whims of buyers/sellers in an unregulated free market. Wozniak and Jobs both met while attending PUBLIC high school in California, a byproduct of the social contract. Pay your taxes and the state will educate your children for FREE. To grow a tree, you first need the seed. But with soil, sunlight and water, that seed will never grow. This metaphor broadly explains the role of the state in providing the environment that allows capitalism to thrive.
THIS. And the supposedly "educated and intelligent" individuals who are jumping on and riding on this ignorant bullshit.........:smt011
Omg Can you even read? Did I not say they built a product that was successful? I think I did. I also said if it weren't for the people who originally invested in the product THEY built or the people who bought it, it would NOT have become as successful as it did. They did not do it by themselves but with the help of everyone who worked at apple, those who invested in it, and those bought it.
Here's some quotes (unedited thanks) made by the Romneys. Arrogant pricks doesn't even begin to describe it: Romneys wife on the tax return scandle surrounding he husband: "We’ve given all you people need to know and understand about our financial situation and about how we live our life." The results of a poll done recently on how the American people feel about Romney releasing his tax records: A majority of Americans (54%) say Mitt Romney should release additional tax returns, while 37% say he should not, according to a USA Today/Gallup snapshot poll conducted Wednesday night. Predictably, Democrats strongly favor his releasing more tax returns, Republicans have the opposite view, and independents mirror the national tendency to favor Romney’s releasing more returns. Here is Romneys take on his own misleading ad: What he’s saying,” Romney told the crowd in Bowling Green, “is that if someone has succeeded, if they built something, he’s saying they didn’t really build it – no, it was the government, it was the government that takes responsibility. So for the student in school that works hard to get on the honor roll, that’s not really them – it was their teacher that did that, and the government that paid for it. And if somebody came here across the border legally and brought their family seeking a better life, their success is not due to them – no, no, they didn’t build it; the government gets credit for that. And if a person in their job says, ‘You know what, I’m going to work hard and get more skills, and I got a promotion’ – that promotion, oh by the way, that’s not yours, that’s thanks to government. That’s where this leads.” Here is what Obama appears to say based on romneys ad: If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be ’cause I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. Here is what Obama said in full: There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me – because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t, look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something, there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires. You're welcome
Even when you read the full text of Obama's speech, it still looks insensitive and out of touch with the business world. The problem with saying "you didn't build that" is taking away the most critical part of running a business...getting started. I ran a small business for 5 years. Started in my house, eventually got enough to rent some office space, raised money, and then started hiring employees. That process took almost two years! Anybody who has ever run a business knows how difficult it is. It takes nothing away from your employees who work hard to grow your business, but the hard part is the risk taking and getting started. Without the people who start companies, we don't have the country we have today. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, HP...all started with one or two guys in a room. Never forget that!
They all started with one or two guys in a room...in the United States of America. Why?? That's the question indirectly Obama is addressing. Agree he didn't articulate his point as artfully as he might have.
Not only that but Obama suciently sums it up near the very end. They all did it by working together. That together word..it's what baffles people with this mind set. They think they are one man in a closed environment with no one directly or indirectly involved being given any credit. Nope. Theys just one man..all alone. I live in the middle of the pacific here James. We can drop you out here in nothing but a raft and see how long it takes you to become successful without the help of those who patrol and work out on the ocean.
Totally agree Alinoa. (can't rep you cause I did already!:weedman There's something core about conservatism that's rooted in selfishness and the ego.
Take a look at mitt's commercial killing Obama, there is a 1 sec scene where he is looking down as he starts to look up again the man eyes are red, I do smoke a lot but as Tom Jackson says " come in man"!!! Pretty much pegged Obama a devil, anyone else here see that?
