Bullshit Iggy, here is what he said in its entirety with context. Vote for who you want but lets not spread misleading information.

Mitt Romney and other Republicans have pounced on a line from President Barack Obama that they say denigrates people who create and build businesses.

As Romney put it in a July 17, 2012, speech in Irwin, Pa., Obama "said this; ‘If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.’"

Here are the relevant excerpts of the speech Obama gave in Roanoke, Va.:

"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

"So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the G.I. Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President -- because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together."

 

So well said and a very true point. Disgusted at the divisive horeshit politics of the right. Either you believe in this country or you don't. Either you believe in patriotism or you don't. Either you believe in honest team work or you don't but quit lying. How do these divisive tactics help AMERICA.

So what does it mean for those who are unsuccessful...somewhere along the line, nobody gave them help?
In that case, every last person in this country should be successful.

He can't be serious. Half the time, people become successful DESPITE Government bureaucracy, red tape, failings, and interferences.

But carry on Mr. President...be sure the next time(?) there is an increase in the employment rate, you remember to give the credit to "somebody else" (perhaps the businesses hiring (that didn't create themselves), and not to your Party.

Obama is talking about the SOCIAL CONTRACT, the unspoken agreement between this nation/government and its people.

Why is America called the land of opportunity??
Is it because Americans inherently are harder working and more talented??

Or does our system of government and laws ALLOW people to maximize their talent and work ethic to be successful??

People really need to research these great American corporate stories and find out how companies like Apple/Google/Microsoft were able to get off the ground early on.

Bill Gates was a college dropout. You don't think his affluent parents greased the skids very early on to allow him to get his business started??

Or Steve Jobs who never completed his undergrad degree.

Too many times people believe in the conservative 'creation myth' advanced by free market devotees, that their success sprang from NOTHING, and conveniently leave out all the fortunate opportunities that allowed these people to prosper early on in their corporate lives.

It's complete and utter horseshit that you're taking his snippet out of context. And yes, it's a talking point which was debunked by the likes of Loki and andreboba. Yet, you and your ilk continue to pull the paranoid, Rush Limbaugh card and create a false scenario.

 

Lets not forget he didn't succeed in becoming the President through campaigning his ass off. Somebody else was the reason he succeeded.

At what point does it stop? I mean, using his logic, you can reach for anything - if it wasn't for your parents, you wouldn't be alive. (We can thank the anti-abortion Conservatives for that one )

What about Government bureaucracy that helped cause successful people to fail? Who do they thank?
